Q&A with Robert Lee

Which piece in your gallery is your favorite and why?

It changes all the time. Right now it is Amethyst vol 3 n.2 p.23 (1987) by Esteban Maroto. for 2 reasons; 1) Estaban's line-work is absolutely gorgeous. His style mixes with the sword and sorcery of Amethyst perfectly. 2) It features one of my all-time favorite Villains in his origin story/ formative years - Mordru the Merciless!

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I've been an insomniac since I was 18. I havent slept for more than 4 hours in a row for 25 years. Most of my online purchases happen in the middle of the night.

How long have you been collecting comic art and what prompted you to start?

The first piece of art I ever bought was from Mike Mignola at the Penta Hotel in NYC in the mid to late 80's. My mom dropped me off at the hotel. I had $30 . I spent $25 on the page. My mom thought I was nuts when she picked me up. Thus was born a life long hobby and collection.

How do you display/store your collection at home?

I have my office, which has 3 out of four walls completely covered in art. Over 75 pieces are hanging throughout my home.

What are your top five most wanted original pages or commissions?

1- A Dell era Magnus or Solar page 2- Anything by Travis Charest 3- A Goran Parlov Starlight Page 4- Any Kirby FF page 5- A JG Jones Cover

Amethyst vol 3 n.2 p.23 (1987) by Esteban Maroto! Twice-Up!

I received this gorgeous page yesterday and my mouth just went agape. Amethyst vs DC mainstay villain Mordru. I absolutely love how badass Esteban draws women. I’ve always loved these issues for the way Giffen tied Mordru to Gemworld, and had already many thousands of years later made him a Legion of Superheroes big bad villain. The line work and attention to detail is amazing. Simply beautiful.

Twice up Art. 13” x 20” approximately on old school DC Bristol.

Esteban Maroto Torres (Madrid 1942). Born in Madrid, he began his career in the 1960s with series like Cinco por infinito, published in English by Continuity Comics as Zero Patrol (heavily retouched by editor Neal Adams).
'Wolff' by Maroto was published in the UK by New English Library in the magazine Dracula. Dracula was published in the US by the Warren Publishing Company under the title Dracula Book 1 in 1972; the cover was by Esteban Maroto.
In the 1970s he started to be known in his own country when the magazine Trinca (comic) published Alma de Dragón. He designed the "metal bikini" for the character Red Sonja, in Savage Tales #3, Comixscene #5, and in the first issue of The Savage Sword of Conan and pencilled her first solo story, which was inked by Neal Adams and Ernie Chan. He also redesigned Satana for Marvel Comics and drew her second solo story in Vampire Tales #3. In issue 4 of the same series he drew an outstanding adaptation of the short story "The Drifting Snow" by August Derleth.
Maroto joined Warren Publishing in November 1971 when artists from the Spanish agency Selecciones Illustrada started appearing in their three horror magazines, Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. Maroto's first story, "Wolfhunt", appeared in Vampirella #14. He would eventually draw 101 stories for them, more than any other artist except Jose Ortiz. Maroto won the Warren Award for best artist/writer in 1972, and his story "A Scream in the Forest" won the best art in a story award in 1973. Maroto remained with Warren until its folding in 1983.
Two Maroto's series were reprinted in Eerie and Vampirella. Manly, renamed Dax the Warrior, was reprinted in issues 39–41, 43–50 and 52 of Eerie. The whole issue 59 was dedicated to Dax, reprinting the majority of these stories. His series Tomb of the Gods was reprinted in Vampirella issues 17–22.
He also contributed black and white illustrations for the Roger Zelazny book Changeling and Larry Niven's The Magic Goes Away.
Maroto subsequently worked on the series Amethyst, Zatanna, Atlantis Chronicles,[1] The Savage Sword of Conan, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Dracula: Vlad the Impaler and X-Men Unlimited. In Italy, he worked for Sergio Bonelli Editore's series Brendon. - from wiki
