Yes, the figures are painted with George's customary gentle quality (sigh... so lovely)
The background stands out as unusual. Due to the texture and the bright color --- the background reminds me of the paint by numbers kits my sisters used to do. Those kits always had bright colors for some reason and the brushes were cheap and so created a lot of texture. So, I at first glance, I was really distracted by the background. I've gotten used to it now and find it a very endearing work of art. Thanks for posting it!
haha!!! "as opposed to the other way around"
I can always count on you Marcus for the BEST commentary. Thank you!
Thanks for pointing out the background as I was thinking "that is not watercolor"
Thanks for being willing to part with it. I absolutely love it. I usually focus on illustration art for sci-fi fantasy book covers. But I could not pass this up! The image says it all in raw, unadulterated spleandor!!!! I'm so glad the grand ethers of universal intelligence allowed it to find it's way to me (all these many moons later!) Thanks again!
WoW! The textures on this one are amazing! I scrolled to the next one in your gallery - but then had to scroll back!! Thanks for posting these. Such a fantastic array!!!
This is a great piece, Chris. I totally agree with you regarding AIs plagiarism. I am surprised someone was allowed to submit "art" that was not their own creation. That just aint right!
You are absolutely correct! I actually like this face BETTER than the one that was chosen for the cover of the book (the 2nd pic I uploaded). The colors are more vibrant but my cheap phone doesn't take the best pics. some of the light oranges are more cantaloupe colored and there the light green you are seeing is stronger and slightly minty. His eyes appear more green "in person". Kelly Freas is one of my top favorite illustration artists.
I visited Alex K's link to his "unfinished" piece. Alex also included a picture of all 3 - presumably 2 unfinished and 1 finished. I am of the opinion that yours looks the most finished - or if not "finished" at least the most developed in terms of the various elements such as the clouds, rocks, lava etc. Of course, they are all knock-outs. But I just thought to mention ...
Wow! Fantastic piece by Mark Zug! Great framing job too! Some folks play it safe with all frames black but you went all out. The color of the burl highlights the characters doing battle. The soft silver-yellow frame forces the viewer to admire the glistening luminous beauty of the beast. Bravo!
For being so small, Clyde sure is able to put a lot of detail in these prelims. This is a particularly nice one. Great find!
Couldn't love this more! A bad-ass babe for sure. I can file this under the heading "Aspirations"! Haha! A face beautiful even as it expresses not of concern, at whomever is attempting to sneak up on her, but but casual annoyance. The insignificant would-be adversary isn't even worth discharging the blast of her weapon. So long sucker!
Whoa... jaw drop moment. Can't believe I never heard of this artist before. Actually... it is far too believable that I am out of the loop on most things... but in this case I have truly been missing out!!!! This is gorgeous!!! [insert heart-eyed emoji]
Thank you for posting!
Photos never do a Terry Oakes painting justice. Great find you have there! Fantastic scene. Thanks for posting!
Wow. What a trip!!! But a beautifully rendered trip courtesy of the great Stephen Hickman! I only wish my dreams were as vibrant (though I'm happy to avoid the 7 evil threats from the story!) Thanks for posting this art and also for providing the story synopsis to inform our visual journey!
I just uploaded another prelim for this one - but it's #1. I'm new to CAF so am slow to figure out the best way to post.
Thank you for the comment!
I have several more preliminaries also. I will try to upload them this weekend. They are gorgeous!
That is one crazy image!
She might have known it would look weird when she called forth the savage dude (writhing in pain???)... could be why she hid behind that tree and away from prying eyes! LOL
Dynamic composition beautifully rendered -- it surely feels like you are in that stopped moment in time.... now i'm waiting to see what comes next!
Thanks for posting!
Right! At first I thought the figure in the door was shooting at the robot (and was a bad shot) but then I realized that the robot is rescuing the woman before she gets assassinated! As soon as robots become available, i'm gonna get one. Given our world's political climate it will pay to play it safe. LOL

wait... are you suggesting they DIDN'T???
WOW!!! Forget the story arc -- no build-up, just BAM!!!! Now I just gotta read this one!

I used to live in Wales and have been to Criccieth many a time. I got excited for a second thinking i found another speaker of Cymraeg - the language of Heaven! haha but not to worry - this artwork is lovely enough! Now i just HAVE to follow him on the socials! Thanks for posting!
Cool observation! To my untrained eye I had just thought it was a cleft in the rock. Of course you are correct. That ominous shadow of their foe is infinitely more enticing to the would-be reader of "Revolt on Phoenix".
This could be a prelim for Bard III which i just posted in my gallery recently. Take a look. At first I thought this prelim only shows a man "vanquishing" sea monsters. But to the left, at waist level to the man it looks like the helmet the lady warrior wears. She may be either crouching down or pinned against the side of the boat by the monsters. In any case this is a very nice piece! I love preliminaries as they document the miriad of ideas the artist was playing with. If I see anymore possibilities for what this is a prelim of I'll add those as comments as well.
Marcus, your comments make me want to read the book as much as the cover art!!!
Wow! Bruce, I am grateful to you for "releasing it to the wild" (pun intended) so it could find its way to me! I can't thank you enough!
Doc Savage wakes up in a far galaxy after being in suspended animation for a millenium.
OMG! I always look for your comments and, this time especially, YOU DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!

Thank you, Ryan! I love this scene - Romas always designs the top third (where the titles would go) so that it seems natural. It's never so obviously wasted space. In this case, the wizard's force is exploding forth in stars and smoke wafts up into the rafters. The way he's using these elements adds MORE for me to take in about the scene. What a master!
Love the composition of this one.
Even more "on the half-shell" than that other venus, she is further protected from the peril by a canopy of purple clouds. So lovely, even planet-orbs draw near (can't say I blame them!)
Fun fact(?): I have the same title by Kevin Eugene Johnson (haven't uploaded the photo yet). He portrays the heroine riding a tri-headed sea dragon! I really should read these books to understand why the covers are so diverse!!
My apologies! I wasn't used to the platform and just uploaded any ole pic i had. I'll upload a better one this weekend and include some close-ups of the elf lady etc. Thanks for being as into this one as I am. No one I know loves these paintings or even gets why I do!
I'll have to look through my notes and try to find my photo of the back of the piece before i framed it - it might be a few days ;-)
By the power of his brush, Sanjulian makes even the gate to the underworld look appealing!!! (his customary palette never disappoints. I'll keep a watch for info on your scifi calendar, but may I please make a special request? Could you please ensure that NOVEMBER has a fantastic image? (My b-day is in that month) Unfortunately, I have found that, for some reason, most calendars seem to have a not-so-great image for my favorite month. Thanks in advace!
The L shaped border looks like a level of detail I've seen George use previously in his other works. However, the characters' faces don't have the same "lyrical"* quality to my naive eye.
*softened but full of expression
revealing my ignorance..... Why is the art credited as "By Alicia Austin and George Barr"? Did Alicia design the concept" What was the division of work?
"Enquiring minds want to know" ;-)
I looked up the title on web translation and it says "The Genetic War". Interesting since the picture looks rather benign.

You are hilarious. I hope we meet at a comic con or something someday!!! Your friends must never be bored! P.S. Thanks for all the great comments!
Gotta L<3 VE those George Barr cats! (the pretty ladies go without saying)
Wow!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU FOR BRING ALFRED KELSNER WORKS TO THIS SITE!!! He is one of my favorite artists - and difficult to find :-)
Whoa! I am into this! Gorgeous background image and dramatic scene depiction. It's a great departure from most of the ones I've seen which are more about ships. Thanks for posting!
