Holy moley! I am writing a bio on Ernie for the Inkwell Awards and was searching for art to use...this is tops! Ernie was possessed on this one, LOL...congrats!
That quality of skill in that pencil art is in direct opposition to the editorial competence shown in the story, Ruben! Wonderful pickup by a nice guy and a helluva storyteller. Congrats!
Good grief, I cannot believe I never saw this before. What an amazing piece, Alex! If you don't mind, I'm going to include it in the Inkwell Awards bio page for Hall Of Fame winner Giacoia; a wonderful example of his dynamic style (not to mention Carmine's of course). Congrats!
Nice page, Nigel! My guess is Frank Giacoia. I just wrote a bio on him for The Inkwell Awards and learned that he and Mike were good friends and worked together quite often; and Frank is listed as an inker on T.A. #1; it's unlikely he inked the Wood art so I'd guess he inked Sekowsky and/or Kane.
Gorgeous, moody work, Tom! Fits Bernie like a (decayed) glove. :-)
Classic cover! Still remember when this came out. What a great acquisition!
Thanks for the link, Aidan...Wow, that is a lot of work. Rich obviously put a lot of thought and effort and time into it. Congrats on a legendary reinterpretation!
Nice! I've been reading all of Gene's DDs since last year (thanks to the Essential editions)--almost all I missed as a kid. This is a great example of Gene as both storyteller and illustrator supreme. Tells you everything you need to know in one shot, and also very cinematic, a trademark of Gene's inimitable style. Well done!
Fantastic photo!! (I used to love that cereal, btw. It was considered healthy at the time.) They both look so happy and handsome. Historical.
Wow...The mood, the atmosphere, the emotion...Gene put the character's entire soul into one card! Beautiful.
Just saw this, Alex! More Cardy brilliance. Truly one of the most under-appreciated artists of his era. Even though he has two books out, he deserves even more. Congrats!
Wonderful, wonderful, Alex! And atypical of most of his work that's out there, so it's as unique as it is masterfully done. Congrats!
Gorgeous, Alex!! Truly a great way to celebrate a birthday...much more memorable than cake!
Can't believe I just saw this post...Wonderful action and (of course) art team! I am officially Hulk-green with envy. Congrats!
Got to be one of the COOLEST, most fun Swanderson covers I've seen! If it's okay with you, I'd like to post it on the non-profit Inkwell Awards site to help honor Murphy's Hall of Fame award. Wonderful!
Wonderful Anderson magic. (Did Steve Rude pose for this? LOL) Seriously, great choice for both character and the "A" artist!
Dames, fedoras, crooks and explosions! What could be better? :-)
How cool! What's amazing is how closely it parallels the G.A. style in the States. And I guess gangsters are universal! Wonderful noir fun.
What a great bit of fun! Thanks for informing me about this, Michael.
Gorgeous linework and use of blacks! Thanks for the education, Royd! Congrats on a wonderful acquisition.
Holy crap, this is amazing! Didn't even know it existed. I remember buying this at a show just for the back cover. Amazing how Frank drew and painted the gorillas twice in panels 1 and 2 (no Photoshop, lol). Congrats, Jim! Truly a piece of art and humor history.
So glad you liked it, Thomas! My pleasure. Amazing sketchbook!
Whoa! Just saw this, Mark. Brilliant! I'm envious but knowing your love of Wood (err, as in Wally), I'm thrilled it went to not only a great fan but a great artist who truly appreciates it. FWIW, I see the Caniff influence as well...but much prefer Wally's figure drawing and anatomy. Congrats!
As the caption reads, "WILD!!" My all-time favorite Kirby Cap cover (if not my all-time favorite Kirby cover, period) by my all-time favorite fellow Motor City Comic-Con artist! Don't know if I'm more envious of you or the buyer! Great job, ya big lug. :-)
Whoa, Jeff! That's not a home, that's an art museum! LOVE it. So envious, but so happy all that art is beautifully preserved and presented. (Must've taken ages to hang!) That would truly be a wonderfully inspirational space. May you enjoy it for decades to come!
HOLY MONKEY CRAP! This is unbelievable...only right way for a recreation is by the original artist. Congrats, Michael!! (How does this only have two comments??) Love it!
Thanks, Adam! I think you're right...I'm still looking for the issue whenever I run across the "cheapie" bins! :-)
What Alex said! I love the texture and design elements of the rocks. I also like the way he leads your eye from panel to panel--something he did without erasing or even thumbnailing by this point; it had all become second nature and intuitive by then. The mark of a master storyteller. Congrats!
Nice, Ray! I hope you have the whole page and this wasn't cut up like some of them were at the time. Kirby westerns are underrated and underappreciated. Thanks!
Congrats on another Kubert winner, Alex! You're way ahead of me, but it's great that it's with someone who truly appreciates it.
Brilliant, Alex! I'm thrilled to see that Joe obviously took his time on this one and gave you a top-notch pinup that would look perfect in any DC war book--inside or as a cover!
A wonderful blend of styles! I think Al would be pleased. Congrats, Khwan!
One of the best yet, Brian! Rudy's stuff just blew me away...page after page of amazingly detailed and dynamic stuff. Congrats!
Good grief, Ben! Choosing a favorite Bob Powell page here is like choosing a favorite potato chip in a bagful! Great classic stuff; and I'm very grateful it's being preserved...if not in my collection, then yours! You deserve it!
WOW! I was never into Metamorpho as a kid but I sure appreciate Ramona's stellar art now. (She also did one of the reboots of Plastic Man, my favorite since Jack Cole.) Congrats on a wonderful piece, Alex!
Nice stuff! Congrats, Dave. I can certainly appreciate the Art Nouveau approach; not easy! (And just as an aside, I would wear this as a T-shirt...) ;-)
This is the first time I've seen this, Michael! I love it so much I'm putting it on my blog tribute to Tony. Hope you don't mind! Just a lovely example of Tony's creativity and skill. Thanks and congrats!
I shudder to think of the amount of time and effort (and perspective) that went into this--on both pencil and ink sides! Amazing piece, Alex. Would love to see the originals framed together--great idea.
Wow! I'd say that's a BIT more intricate than a Richie Rich...But far more rewarding (IMHO)! Delightfully decorative. Congrats, Alex!
Sublime is right, Ruben! I'm making a copy of this one for future reference. Ink class in session here! :-)
Such gorgeous inking and spotting of blacks! A primer in the discipline of storytelling as well. (That newspaper!! Hard to tell on the scan but it looks like it was all done by hand. In these days of Photoshop, how many of even the best inkers could do that?) CONGRATS.
Holy crap, Ruben! I'm right there with you. Big fan (and hater, depending on the week) of the market as well. What a GEM of a strip! And the fact that Blondie mentions "Mr. Bumstead" only makes it more historically sweeter, on top of the already-famous reference of The Great Crash. And of course, the art is lovely. Amazing how Chic Young evolved. Thanks and congrats!
Great page, Tim! I liked your comments as well. Interesting that all the background is in the first three (top) panels only. The expressions on all the characters are priceless, which to me was one of Ditko's strengths over Kirby. Steve could be as subtle or over the top as the dialog suggested. More importantly is the rarity of this page---how many pages in Spidey's history have ever shown JJJ smiling in EVERY PANEL? lol Thanks for sharing!
Good grief! This is beautiful. Mike is one of those rare breeds who gets better, not older. the anatomy is amazing (including the callipygian Cat!), the shading impeccable and the expressions spot-on. Congrats!
Fabulous acquisition, Tim! Not only classic Kaluta, but frankly it's hard to tell this was done 20 years after his original run--which says a lot about Mike's skill! Congrats!
Just gorgeous! Joe still "has it". Pencil, Ink, it's all magic in his hands. Great piece.
