Hi, Jerry. Thanks, and I reminder to myself of these two great pages (which happen to be in storage.) They were some of the first artworks I ever collected.
Yes, classic struggle between the greedy landlord and the meek cobbler! Those last three panels really bring it home. George Rousseu did a good job inking, but it would have been great with Ditko's own inks.
If I ever get around to it, my plan is to have this strip framed together with a toy model of a Citroën DS
A masterpiece! I love the panel of a distraught Betty hanging up the phone. What a storyteller Ditko was!
More than amazing! I love the middle panel
Most amazing page on CAF I've seen in a while. You are lucky to have this one in your collection. Congrats!
It does not get much better than this. Congrats
Hi Michael, Cool! That page was the 2nd comic art page I ever bought (the first was a Ditko page). I love the perspective Colan uses on these pages. Cheers
The best of the best. Big congrats with winning this page.
Agreed! I love they way Ditko depicts Daredevils powers in the middle panel. Very unique, and yes, very Ditko.
Doesn't get much better than this!
Great page! I have a page from this issues too and I, likewise, look at it each and every day.
Yes, this drawing never fails to please me. I've had it for about 10 years now.
This cover is "the comic" of my chilhood spinner rack. Very nice, and well preserved for furture generations.
This is so awesome! Love the printetd page and tear sheet. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks, Lee. As a kid I remember discovering Kirby's pre-hero stories in the back issue market. I could buy a stack of ToS, TTA, Westerns, etc. unbagged and ready to read, from the local used book shop for cheap. Those were the days!
Yes :) It's too bad we can't see the original pencils under the whiteout. From what I have seen, Lee made a lot of editorial comments on this issue, both critical and complimentary to Kirby's work.
This was my first Kirby page and it absolutely blew my mind when I got it. Thanks
This cover and Avengers 8 are my personal favorites of the Kirby covers. Issue 8 was one of my first back issues bought for a few dollars back in 1975. I have a nice kang page by Heck from issue 23.
Nice framing job! I've been thinking about doing something like this for years, and this is great inspiration.
Great page! The writing in blue ink might be Sol Brodsky's. It looks a bit to legible to be Stan's.
Thanks! This one is special too, because The Avengers 43-44 were some of the first back issues I ever collected and the image of The Red Guardian made quite an impression on the 10 year old me.
Thanks, Lee. I totally agree, and Cap 117 is part of one of my all-time favorite Marvel story lines.
Nice seeing this piece again, Mark. I used to own it and had it very nicely framed. Is it still in the frame?
All four panels are the best of the best! Stan couldn't make up his mind, apparently :) On the previous page he complains that Kirby "again!" has made a female figure not to his liking.
So true Mark. The pages I've seen from this issue are full of corrections and snide remarks by Lee. Apparently this was a contentious issue in general (i.e. Lee changing the story that Kirby had intented).
I'll join the chorus here, Mark. What a page !!! It always seemed to me that Ditko made Gwen's hairpins to look like horns in when he introduced her, to make her a bit of a femme fatale in contrast to the saintly Betty Brant.
Classic piece of americana
It does not get much better than this. The dawn of the Bronze age in a single page.
Nice page! I like that Colan gave Peter a closet for his webfluid refills and spare costume. I don't recall ever seeing Spider-Man's storage space in other stories ?
This story is a classic. The way Ditko drew the robot's eyes while in his "human suit" is just amazing.
The great Colan pages just keep coming! Your descriptions are as good as the art.
Great page, Sean. This was really a great Colan period, on Daredevil and Captain America.
