This turned out really well. I'm glad Joe talked you into finishing it. Thanks for sharing it. ![]() Thanks Alex and everyone. Joe's exquisite line may not be on this version but he certainly deserves the credit for making it happen. |

King Conan's Trophy Wall Mike Netzer (P) and Joe Rubinstein (Tonal Ink Wash) Owner: Chris C Comment posted on 1/3/2011 You're right, Will. The pencil line alone didn't bring this out. But it was considered when drawing it. Notice all the open spaces on Conan and the girl, and how that contrasts with the busy background in the original pencils. When Joe started doing the tones, he showed me an early version that wasn't as contrasty relative to foreground/background. He asked if I agreed with the direction. I not only said yes, but that he shouldn't worry about taking it to an extreme. And he did. It's the kind of thing that can be best done in tone but more difficult in pencil, at least when working with line art and letting such decisions wait for the finish. |

SUPERMAN PIN-UP BY NEAL ADAMS AND JOE RUBINSTEIN Owner: Victor Lim Comment posted on 4/15/2010 I originally drew this figure around 1976 as a merchandising item for a Continuity Studios job. I tried to capture that iconic Superman image. Neal inked it and it went on to become one of the more identifiable Superman images of the '80's. The story is at my site: http://michaelnetzer.com/rEvolution/content/view/254/87/ As a Continuity product, it was generally assumed that Neal drew it. But he didn't. He only inked it. There's a newer commission by him based on this figure with nicer lighting and shadow. but it is basically traced from this figure and slightly rotated. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=91347&GSub=12757 Joe Rubinstein's very nice inks here are a recreation traced from a printed version. And a beautiful job at that. -Michael |

King Conan's Trophy Wall by Mike Netzer Owner: Chris C Comment posted on 3/15/2010 Thanks Chris for the kind words and to everyone for the wonderful comments. Good to see this working out so well. Working with pencil and paper again is a big thrill. After more than 15 years on a computer, it's as if a new level of drawing is unfolding. I look forward to a new adventure with every piece and hope to do many more. I also hope to return to something at DC. As the publisher that was a home to me for most of my career, these drawings are developing an itch for a full comics project. Let's hope that's a premonition that's on its way to coming true. |

Mike Nasser's Batman Owner: Black Adler Comment posted on 12/25/2009 I agree with on both counts, Will. I've studied this piece in Photoshop to try to see the inking structure and it's done in away of line and feathering with defining areas to fill in blacks. That's a method that I never worked in. When I've inked, I'd usually ink everything in one process, filling in blacks as part of the line work. This piece looks more methodical and has much more sensitivity to line than I capable of when working in conventional materials. (more...) |

Mike Nasser's Batman Owner: Black Adler Comment posted on 12/25/2009 But I agree with you that it's an odd thing. I would have had to have been in a highly "altered" state to do such a thing. Which is not out of the question. But then again, I still have vivid memories of all the altered states I've been in, and this one simply doesn't register. In all honesty, it looks more like a commission reconstruction done on a page that had my signature on it... or a very good reconstruction of my signature. I understand the many quest9ions this raises but like you said. It's also strange that I'd do such a thing. But we're investigating and are looking for ways to track down the "Stevie" who apparently commissioned it. Good to see you again! -Michael |

Mike Nasser's Batman Owner: Black Adler Comment posted on 12/24/2009 Faking Adams can be precarious because it's usually easier to see mistakes. But faking Nasser doing Adams makes it much less suspicious. The inking has some weak points that are uncharacteristic of Adams, such as the protruded knee, and certain areas of the other leg. My inking was also notably more more heavy handed than this and the marker coloring (or shading) is something I never did on sketches. Though the signature looks like my handwriting (also like Neal Adams' handwriting). No objection to keeping it posted here. |

Mike Nasser's Batman Owner: Black Adler Comment posted on 12/24/2009 This is also very strange to me. I don't recall ever doing anything like this. I simply never did this type of sketch which is a direct and blatant copy of other work. I was not that good an inker then and the coloring looks like markers not pencils. the type used for storyboards by assistants at Continuity. If I'm wrong, I have no memory of it, which would be odd. Very suspicious. |
