I'm certain the artist is Tom Simonton who's drawn Amazon woman.
The three Joe Smith Universal Studios Sheena concept art for the 1975 Raquel Welch Sheena, Queen of the Jungle movie that was never made has been featured in the biography book of Joe Smith art.
Dave Stevens told me in person at a con that he wanted to sculpt Irish McCalla as Sheena. He sent a postcard that he hadn't drawn Irish McCalla yet as he was looking for the perfect pose. After he passed, his friend told me Dave was going to draw Irish based on her nude photos taken by Alberto Vargas (Irish made Vargas promise not to publish the photos. He kept his word. After Vargas passed, a collector found a few photos, Irish signed a few on the condition they not be published in her lifetime. Later 5 were published in Playboy. 13 more were discovered and these were the ones Dave was going to use for reference. If you ever saw her 1955 Sheena tv show, you'll understand why Dave admired her as much as Betty.
Looks great Jeff. It's going on my Wall of Jungle Girls art. Thanks! I'm surprised Sergio never met Irish McCalla. He usually draws a lot of Sheena's in her tv show costume. I hope he draws his Sheena story in Funnies one day. If anyone wants to see videoclips of the 1956 Sheena where Sergio Aragones was her stuntman as he told Jeff on the Groo art page, see: http://terrororstralis.com/sheena/irish/TV/56-TV.htm
That was fun to read Jeff! I'm surprised Sergio never met Irish McCalla. He usually draws a lot of Sheena's in her tv show costume. I hope he draws his Sheena story in Funnies one day. The artist is famed painter Joseph Smith who also painted the Ben-Hur movie poster. A biography is planned and will include this painting.
Hi Frank, this is Frank (Comic2read) and we talked at C2E2. Looking forward to the Jungle Queen book. Did you get my email about the French museum exhibit link on the Leopard Men's statues that would look dramatic if you draw them for Jungle Queen? Did you get a chance to see the 1956 Sheena DVD? Frank
That is very very nice art. I hope you consider painting another famous 1950's Jungle Girl Irish McCalla who starred as Sheena. See Sheena videoclips and photos here: http://terrororstralis.com/sheena/irish/irish-intro.htm
It's very very nice but where are the leopard spots? It'd be nice to see you draw Sheena covers for Moonstone.
A joyful Jungle Girl. Frank Cho really nails what a Jungle Girl should be. And to think we still have to wait a year for the French comic! Sneak previews please to bide the time. Also coincidentally this looks like Holly. Holly is an aerobics instructer at a gym I used to go to. One time the gym went completely silent and I stop lifiting weights to see what was going on. I see all these men who look like they are about to cry staring at the balcony. Holly is walking on the balcony in bikini like tights with the sun shining on her long blonde hair. Very angelic. It's easy to understand why she was so arrogant. Anyway Holly looked like a Frank Cho drawing come to life.
Every Batmobile should have the face of a bat, whether abstract or concrete. Not wild about the pointy front.
This and his other newest Vampi look much better. More "alive." Maybe it's the new way he's drawing her eyes. Evokes the Warren Vampirella very well.
Jeff, this is very original and creative. Jordi did great work. This is tops in your collection.
Excellent Tarzan art. It captures the pulp atmosphere of the jungle novels. Have you ever drawn Sheena, Queen of the Jungle? Here is a website on the 1956 Sheena TV show starring Irish McCalla: http://terrororstralis.com/sheena.htm
Was the face based on Gena Lee Nolin?
Very Nice! All Sheena comics should look like Irish McCalla. For more Irish McCalla, check out this Sheena website. Rare photos, videoclips of her Sheena TV show, audio interview and other actresses: http://terrororstralis.com/sheena.htm
That is from the Tele-Roman Sheena issues. I have a mint complete set of the 12 issues. I wish the artist painted her to look more like the star Irish McCalla. You can see the covers and interior pages here on this Sheena website. This page shows the Irish McCalla episodes, videoclips and Tele-Roman issues. http://terrororstralis.com/sheena/irish/TV/56-TV-list.htm
When Frank Cho draws a Jungle Girl cover, it's an event. He's excellent at drawing expressions and those drive the readers impressions of the cover. I like the covers with definitive expressions he has done (defiance, joy) but the reason the swimming #3 cover is dull to me is that Jana has no expression. That's why I think it should be dropped and replaced with the exciting and dramatic #4 Jana lassoed cover. And then we can get a new #4 cover too!
On his website, the #4 concept covers are excellent!----------------------------- The #4 scribble with the three Mer-Men with lasso is a better direction because it's more dramatic and shows Jana's defiant expression. It's a more tense scene. The way Frank draws intense eyes and expressions really highlights an action packed cover.
By itself, the #3 cover is very good but compared to Frank Cho's other Jungle Girl covers, it was a little disappointing.--------------------------------------------- It is way too similar to the previous #2 cover. Almost the same swimming pose just minus the octopus. It's very serene not much happening cover but it does not reflect the action packed story in #3 which would have made a better cover by him.--------------------------------------------- Frank Cho sets high standards and has presented us with fantastic covers, for which we are all grateful and appreciative. I hope time constraints from other projects will lessen and allow him more time to devote to Jungle Girl covers.-------------------------------------------------
Wow! What a good looking Vampirella. Harris should hire him to draw a story.
What I like about Frank Cho's art (besides the clean lines and well drawn women) is that, and I think people miss this point, is that Cho is willing to think outside of the box. He considers other viewpoints, even if they disagree with his own, and will apply them if they improve the art.
Fighting the octopus is a classic Jungle Girl scene nicely done. Your Jungle Girl atop the mammoth cover (volume 1, #2) really nailed what a Jungle Girl should be. I hope your work for Marvel doesn't take away your time on conceptualizing Jungle Girl covers. Please don't rush them! Looking forward to your interpretation of the Jana vs Mer-Men rituals story for volume 2, 3# and #4. OT On the new Jungle Girl DE project (I have not seen any pictures) can you post work in progress pictures and will there be a section for your autograph? Like on the name plate? The Jungle Girl logo is a fantastic design and it would be good to have it reproduced on the name plate. Thanks for reading, Comic2read
As a Sheena fan, I like it! I'm partial to the daylight one. Check out this Sheena website: http://members.optusnet.com.au/%7Epwgr2/Sheena/Sheena-home.htm
Mark, very nice. Would love to see your version of the definitive Sheena actress Irish McCalla. Here is a website about her and Sheena: http://members.optusnet.com.au/%7Epwgr2/Sheena/Irish/Irish%20intro.htm
I like the idea of a painting. See this Sheena site for reference: http://members.optusnet.com.au/%7Epwgr2/Sheena/Sheena-home.htm
