Fantastic! Congrats!
A great example of patience being a virtue. Congrats on swinging the deal for this piece two years down the road. A marvellous cover.
Great page, Lee. Terrific composition in every panel – especially the bottom three: the hand on the doorknob, the opposite angle and foreshortening, and the killer POV through the crooked arm. Also: the backlighting and use of shadow on DD in the top-right panel! A beauty.
Great Brunner OA. Congratulations on the win!
And as the former owner post-Brauny, I second that sentiment. Well done!
Thanks for sharing this, Ron. I haven't seen much OA with Bill's inks over Gene's pencils. Bill always struck me as a precise artist, and you can see it in the attention to the intricate detail here, especially in the feathering of the gradation from black to white on their legs and arms. It's a beautiful example of the Colan/Everett combo. Congratulations!
Beautiful. Everett did the impossible: retaining the subtlety and nuance of Colan's pencil shading. This is probably as close as an inked Colan page will get to looking like the original pencils. Congrats.
Such incentive work by Adams, and perfectly enhanced by Palmer's inks. And a great story behind your purchase. Thanks for posting!
What a fantastic find, Ron! I have the hardcover reprints of PS Magazine (published by Abrams in 2011), so it's a blast to see a piece of the OA, especially one that isn't included in the Abrams book - and especially if it's one of the few still in existence. Congrats!
LOVE Neal's work, and this is a stellar example. Congrat!
LOVED Wood's work oh The Spirit! What a great example. Congrats!
The cast shadow is genius. It's what makes the page pop. Colan was so skilled at using contrast to draw the eye - contrast in size, shape and tone. This is fantastic!!
A great idea and a special Christmas gift, Alex. Frank sure knows how to exceed expectations with his commissions. And as a bonus, how can you lose with Frank's version of Bev from HTD #1? Gorgeous.
A wonderful piece of comic history, and a remarkable piece of comic art. Congratulations, Keif, and thanks for your note. If you ever decide to sell it, Corporal Beevers would probably be interested. ;)
Congrats on your first Colan HTD. Hard to argue with the price!
An exemplary example of the Brunner Duck! Congratulations. Then again, I don't think there is a page from issue #1 that ISN'T exemplary. Such a great book.
Ah yes. Iconic. I bought the signed first edition when it was published and I still marvel at it. Congrats on a stellar addition to the collection!
Wowzer! I somehow overlooked this in the Heritage auction. An excellent page from a landmark book. Space aliens and Muhammad Ali? Penciled by Neal Adams? How can you go wrong?
No half measures when Feank does a commission. He goes above and beyond. Lovely attention to detail on this!
Such imagination, and the skill to realize it. Gene could do the tangible and intangible equally well: the massive machinery and molten liquid here (or mist or fog or flames in other cases). Love the foreshortening in this, too. Who needs 3D movies? Gene could do great 3D with just his pencil.
Ummm... I meant "IS my favourite book." When I get excited, grammar goes out the window.
Phenomenal. Avengers are my favourite book, John B was my favourite Avengers artist. and this is my favourite period of the Avengers. What I'd give for a page like this.... A hearty and heartfelt congratulations!
A stellar Brunner piece. Great composition, amazing detail.
Stop here for glory, indeed. Cap and Kirby machinery: what more could you want? Glorious!
Stellar. The man knew what to do with a pencil and paper, didn't he?
I have cover envy. Such a classic issue and iconic Gene Colan cover. Congratulations!
A sweet Colan splash. He sure had some fine page composition skills. Congrats!
Brilliant. I can understand your elation. Such an iconic cover. Congratulations!
Love Frank's composition on this, Alex: the vortex of characters circling the ancient one. A beauty!
Man, I love Steranko from this period. A true graphic artist. This should be hanging in a gallery.
The renderings of Sif and Balder are astounding. Just those few simple lines to denote their shapes in the blaze of light. Brilliant.
I was so tempted by this when I saw it in the HA auction, Ron. Congrats on a great Kirby western page!
Brilliant, Jeff. Love Kubert's DC war covers. Where did you find this???
Jeff, what a great panel page by Gene. Such unusual compositions in the individual panels and the page as a whole. And a treat that Gene (or Adrienne on his behalf?) commented on it.
This page has been on here since 2005 and no one has commented on it? I need to right this wrong. Spectacular Colan DD splash. It's a little late in the day to say "congrats on the acquisition", but I'll say it anyway. Congrats!
Now THAT'S creativity! Thanks for posting the close-up detail, too.
Fantastic page! Karen looks like she could use a good hug to ease those worries.
Gene was so skilled at composing pages to lead the viewer's eye. Love the Z shape that this page takes. Masterful!
Gene sure knew how to use the page, didn't he? Masterful composition. I know you've had this page for something like 5 years, but "congratulations" is still in order.
I was wondering who the winning bidder was on this one. Congratulations. A sweet Colan HTD page.
