Not sure how I missed this...but this is beautiful!!!! ![]() Another thanks! To say I was excited when it popped up is all gross understatement. My eyes practically popped out of my skull ha Supposedly there are a few other 6x9 prelims for the cover (including one that matches the final) but they've never surfaced. Maybe Toth held onto them. |

Alex Toth- letter discussing Mignola Owner: Nick Warmack Comment posted on 1/4/2023 For what it's worth, I believe Toth was bi-polar and even harder on himself than anyone else. He unfairly held everyone to his own impossible, hyper-critical standards. Ive noticed so many of his sketch pages with crossed out writing at the top. But it's such a shame that it stopped him from doing writing or comic work later in life and also that he couldn't find value in other artists work. Thanks for sharing! |

They fed him well! Very cool mix of wash tones give definition to the massive frame and take this a step further into realism. ![]() Haha he's a beefy boy! Yeah, I really love the balance between cartoon shape language and realism in the toning. It's not traditional comic stuff but it's so great! It's also very hard to capture wash tones and watercolor in a scan. It really pops in person. |

Toth Owner: William Wray Comment posted on 12/16/2021 I've long admired this piece since you first posted it and just am returning to admire it again. Can I ask how big it is? I know Toth often worked smaller (6X9, 8.5 X11, 9X12 etc.)

This is wonderful! Not sure how I am only seeing this in your collection now. Love the description...think we all feel the same way when we see a Felix art drop we really want! Super dynamic page with that top panel having all that DWJ goodness...and then that bottom panel....BRB getting up...turning around....what happens next??? Turn the page! ![]() Thanks Steve! It was my top choice for those exact reasons. There are so many great DWJ pages in Beta Ray and Dead Earth that are beautiful emotional moments but since it was going to be my first (and maybe only) DWJ page, I was deadset on nabbing something with action and speedlines that DWJ is known for and this page delivered in spades. Also, for a second I read BRB as be right back and it kind of still works (him getting slammed and sliding away across the ground) haha |

Very exciting to see as well. Murphy's alternating panel types tells the two stories that are intertwined and they work beautifully on the page to enhance the main storyline. ![]() Thanks Marcus! I wrote a whole long description about how this moment in the comic really stood out to me as heartbreaking, cinematic and beautiful but the post didn't work and I lost what I wrote and didn't want to rewrite it again ha But yeah, the storytelling is beautiful and so emotional. Feel very lucky that this page was still available! |

By the hand of the creator! This Toth pin up has all the nice things you'd attribute with his time in animation for Hanna Barbera. The high degree of effort in design and proficient skillful figurework is amplified by the grandiose header and copious backgrounds. ![]() Thanks Marcus! Yeah, my favorite period of Toth's work is after his last stint at Hanna Barbera when his animation work influenced his comic art the most. The simplicity and economy of his stuff in the early 80's onwards is just beautiful. Its just too bad that he didn't do more narrative work in that period. |

Awesome page! I had a similar experience, myself --- I had a wish list of a few pages from this issue, initially went to p. 29 during the drop, balked at the price, and grabbed another that was high on my list. All these pages are great and they scream Harren, so I'm glad I managed to get one. Congratulations! ![]() Thanks! Yeah its always tricky to decide on the spot. I usually find that if you try to guess how much something will cost it always ends up being about double whatever you guessed. As was the case with pg29 which is also the one I wanted (same as everyone else I'm sure haha) but this one was close and less than half the price so I'm very happy that I got it! |

Congrats on owning this absolutely gorgeous Toth page. I wouldn't worry about the lumpy boy! Toth was so relentlessly self-critical it's almost comic. ![]() Thanks Aaron! The lumpy boy actually doesn't bug me at all. If you take a look at the rest of his annotated notes on the story, this page is the one where he's the least critical of all. The fact he seems actually happy with most of the shots just speaks to how great it is and makes me feel even luckier to own it! |
