Thanks Julien. I love that retro feel mixed with a little grit here and there. The original Batman comics and comics in general were never rooted in strict literalism--and that same fantasy/free approach greatly appeals to me still. Dead rigid "realism" kills comics, at least for me--altho I know others go for that.
Thank you. It was a great script to draw, tons of visual opportunities to take advantage of.
Thanks a lot Bryan! Alan Moore provided a great script to draw: full of visual opportunities; simple, clear, Strong!
You're welcome, Bryan! They were the kind of scripts that were a lot of fun to draw. Alan Moore was fantastic to work with--he even asked what sort of material I preferred to illustrate. I threw out a few ideas, such as always liking those strange nutty conspiracy ideas about secret worlds under a giant hole at the North Pole...and Nazi UFOs surviving the war...and this is what he came up with. Fun stuff.
Thanks a lot Frank for the comment. It's been a long while since I looked at the printed version but yes, I believe there were a lot of words in that script. A bit of a task for the letterer to fit in.
Thanks Kevin, that is the spirit I love too--the spirit of the great old stuff, which had romance, mood, a sprinkling of fun, adventure, etc. That's what I try for.
Hi Larry, thanks-- I am glad it hit you! I always loved the drama in the Superman mythology. I remember how much it affected me as a kid and tried to channel that back in when I did this work, so glad it came through. Would love to do more on this someday but doesn't look too likely unless I do more pinups on my own... which I might!
Thanks, Frank, for the enthusiasm! I wish this had been the cover by itself...looking at this now, I see I added the trail from the rocket, on the computer--as well as the foreground element. The rest was a marker/ink/pencil drawing.
Hi Ben, thanks for your interest and comment. I just sold this page, but the others are available at 200 per.
Eric and fred, thanks! You know it is a bit in your face--and i didn't display this a lot, before now, because it reminded me of September 11--an airplane going into a building. It was kind of eerie because I drew this before 9/11. Of course it is just a comic book cover but you probably know what I mean.
Kevin, and Eric, thanks for the comments! I was going for frosty/creepy feeling--glad that came across. Imagine being on the hill--moonlight--then this thing comes sweeping up and pins you with its beam...
Kevin, and Lee, thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed these covers, I'll be posting more stuff.
Terry, thanks a lot, I'll definitely be putting up more stuff. Glad you are enjoying it!
Thanks Adam! It's been a while since I heard that saying ("works a treat")--you must be from across the pond!
Kevin & Frederic: thanks very much for the comments, I am glad you enjoyed the images, more coming soon!
