Description"Paid In Full." When I first saw this image, it was one of several great Gasoline Alley dailies offered in an early 1990s Sotheby's catalog. Looking at the dailies pictured in that catalog was likely the first time that I became interested in Frank King's work. In those days however, my main interests was mainstream comic book art, and I did not bid on any of the Alleys. In the years since, my admiration for Frank King's work in the 20s, 30s, and early 40s has grown. and I have acquired a few Gasoline Alley dailies. Nonetheless, I always regretted not winning the dailies in that early Sotheby's. Patience, serendipity, plain luck, call it what you like. Flash forward to the Spring 2005 Heritage, and one of the Sotheby's dailies is listed but not even pictured in the catalog. It's calling out to me and I am determined to win. Yes! The artistry of first panel is amazing. Nothing pretty to look at, the panel tells of survival in the post Depression era. And I like the sentiment of Skeezix feeling the joy of a hard earned paycheck. Amazing what a comic artist like Frank King can communicate with Words & Pictures.Social/Sharing |

Congratulations on a great strip! Those guys certainly look like they've seen a thing or two. Nice contrast with Skeezix. Standing under the light he's the only one without any shading - practically shines. Just by contrasting him against the shaded guys in panel 1 and the shadows of the guys in panel 2 King was able to pull off a true sense of youth without coming across cliched. Very nice. -Tim D.
