I’ve been requesting some commissions recently that highlight some of my favorite stories, and this is one of them. Around the mid ‘80’s as a kid is when I started getting into comics, one of my favorite books was Spectacular Spider-man. This was a run that started in the high 80’s through issue 100 – it was almost a Spidey/Black Cat team-up book. Those issues had a lot of great elements: the black costume, the Black Cat (and her up and down relationship with Spider-man), the crime angle involving unique characters like Cloak & Dagger, the Kingpin, and the very offbeat character the Spot – his unique powers I thought always brought up some nice visuals.

98-100 were my favorite in the run, and I thought it would be great to get a commission underscoring those issues. Chris is a great guy, and I’ve gotten a commission from him before but wanted to get one that played up the humorous elements which he does so well. I sent him this idea before Phoenix Comicon and he said he also loved these Spidey issues (and the Spot!) and agreed to take this on – I’m glad he did! The coloring is awesome, he played up the Spot’s visuals, and added Felicia’s bad luck power in a pretty comedic way – really nice all around.

The Spot is a genius character choice for a commission. Great piece.

Thanks, and I agree. The Spot is definitely one of the quirkiest characters out there but visually very unique.
