DescriptionDo y'all remember 'Assistant Editor's Month' back in 1983? The not-a-crossover company-wide event where, supposedly, all the MARVEL books were 'taken over' by the Assistant Editors for one month only, resulting in a gaggle of MAD-Magazine-like gag pages spread across the entire company output. An interesting experiment.Kelley Jones has informed me that Guice inked himself on this page, though it does still smack of Kelley's work. Note the multiple changes in dialogue (as well as the slight >ahem< modification to the dog in the lower panel) to the published version. The dialogue changes are substantial enough to make me wonder if Guice lettered this himself as a sort of 'first draft.' It certainly doesn't sound like the kind of stuff Bill would have written. The final versions of the dialogue copy, as well as the non-urinating canine, would have apparently been executed on a Stat Copy, leaving this original unaltered. A fascinating artifact of the time. 1983-1984 are my favorite years of Guice art with Micronauts, X-Men and the Micronauts, and his Marvel Fanfare portfolio. Approached with cartoony style for sure, but it had a great eye appeal to the kids reading his works.

Assistant Editor Month has a number of classics, but Hembeck's art for Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #86 cemented my love of swirly knees.
