DescriptionDapper Wolvie, crispy Wolvie, now my fave Wolvie…brown and tan clad! Celebrating Logan’s 50th anniversary in his best duds!Hope everyone had a great Christmas and are still enjoying some time with fam and friends before we hit 2024! I try to cap off CAF posting years with a banger, and this fits that bill, at least for me! Since New Avengers hit the comic shops in the mid-2000s I’ve been a fan of Finch’s Wolverine. Remember the issue 5 cover?! Perfecto. I remember watching an interview of Finch saying he basically got that pose from John Buscema’s Wolvie run. Finch said JB was the king of gestural figure work and it looks like he took some of that for this page! From Wolverine #900 which was a huge issue containing a bunch of Wolvie short stories. This was a throwback story and was initially meant to be published in a Marvel Comics Presents type anthology book – see at the top of the board. I asked David about this at a con, as some of these pages have his pencils but Miki inks on a separate board. He said the first pages had pencils and inks done on one board but then the story got shelved. When they got the green light to finish it, in the interest of time, he did the pencils and Miki did inks on the blue line. So, on this page, got both gents! One of those that I immediately loved purely from looking at it. Then, just checks many a box: Finch Wolverine, Miki inks (my first piece with his inks), claw slashing, through NINJAS, and in the brown and tan costume! And all that times 4 as we get different poses and perspectives in each panel! As far as the B&T costume, just classic. The suit I saw Wolvie in first and grew up on. And check out Uncanny X-Men #139 for the most nonchalant answer ever whenever Nightcrawler asks Logan why he changed his costume :) Overall, hard to top as Finch OR Wolverine example for me! Happy New Year, all, and best wishes in your collecting endeavors as we enter 2024! Social/Sharing |

The brown and tan costume is the best! Gorgeous quad panel close combat against ninjas on display here. I am a fan of Finch's work and this is a wonderful example. Also great to see you got both artists on the same board. Closing out 23' with some claw slashing action! 👏👏👏

Gorgeous sequential battle scene as carnage ensues across all four panels. Finch's style works perfectly here. I'm jealous!

Definitely a great Finch and Wolverine example. Love the detail and angles for each panel, as Wolverine cuts his way through all those ninjas. Congrats on picking this up and Happy New Years.

This book wasn't a real anniversary issue if I remember right. Just a goofy way to make a super-sized Wolvie issue (it had 8 stories in it) a la Deadpool #900, which was released a little before this one. We KNOW Deadpool didn't have 900 issues! The story this page from was OK, pretty straightforward, but one of those that was ALL about the art lol. Thanks, J, and all, for the comments!

WHOA! Now this is a statement. Wolverine was made to brawl, and there's nothing better than him mowing through lackeys. Finch is so good. Each panel is perfection, but they add up to be greater than their individual parts through such stellar storytelling.

Exactly, Kevin. I like my cover and pin up-y stuff like everyone else. But I love the right interiors just as much. This is an example of that. Uber effective way to highlight Wolverine doin' what he do in a top to bottom sequential. And I agree! "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" adage exists for a reason, doesn't it?! Thanks, man!

When I take you out, in fight with me,
KG, here's the way it's goin' to be:
You will set in lines a team of ninja forces,
In the slickest inks you ever see!
Claws all punks from this leather Wolvie
When he take you out in a hurry,
When I take you out ink by Miki with the Finch on art!
Watch that Finch and see how he renders
When I slice them nine hundred killers.
Wolvie pokes'll peek thru' those ninjas and their eyes will pop!
Ideal swell dresser, now upholstery's brown,
The fashion's genuine leather,
With them it's curtains, y' can mow them down,
In case there's a change in berserker.
Cool bright shine claws slicin' and dicin',
Ain't no finer thing I'm avengin'
You c'n shuriken if you're thinkin' 'at I'd care to swap
Fer that shiny, Danny Miki with the Finch comic art!

Ha ha, Marcus! One of your best, man. EVERY line's a banger!

Talk about flow, baby! Also couldn't help but think Billy Crystal from that scene in "When Harry Met Sally" :)
Thanks!!

Finch Wolverine, Miki inks, claws slashing through NINJAS, Wolverine in the brown and tan costume! This is the suit I first saw Wolvie in and grew up on as well, but interestingly enough I always loved the yellow and blue one better as soon as I discovered it on Hulk #181 and other back issues. However, every few years I get tired of whichever costume they put him in most frequently, and then I find myself jonesing for the other one. I go back and forth, but that's alright because I love them both and feel they're both classics! An OUTSTANDING page, Kahlil!

Oh I hear ya. When I look back, so many good and key stories in the blue and yellow. And I liked the Cassaday tweak from Astonishing X-Men! But yeah, when I go back to being a kid, what immediately pops in my head is Secret Wars and the cover to Cap Annual 8. You know I'm a Zeck freak, lol. That coupled with the classic poster and cutout stand by Art Adams. Brown and tan with the super nostalgia all the way. Glad you like, and the fact we like multiple looks? Good thing! Thanks, man!

Or something like that :)
Rumble imminent! A Wolvie vs Hulk piece is yet to be checked on my list, but I shalt get there! Thanks, T!

Such a great sequence of panels! You can just feel what it would be like to be Wolverine mowing his way through all those bodies, thrashing and pushing purely on instinct & experience. Very visceral. And beautifully drawn. Congrats on a phenomenal end-of-year post. Can't wait to see what you post in 2024!

Such a savage page man! Love the full width panels and also that Finch shifted the flow of action away from simply left to right in panels 3 &4.

Good point, Ken! As you move down, you got the right slash across the front in panel 1, then the twist to the left slash in panel 2, then the change in perspectives to his back in panel 3 then flip to the front in panlel 4 - the beauty of action scene storytelling :) Thanks for the add, man, and glad you like!

Ohhhhhh, yeahhhhhhhhhh. Logan is out to lay down some mean business, and Finch and Miki -mean- business here, BEAUTIFULLY collaborating on a treasure trove of Wolverine action shots. Just as you say, K, it only lacks the kitchen sink, and it's a fantastic visual example of "throw everything you have at him, and he'll just keep coming". The sword wielder in panel 3 doesn't look anywhere near as confident as I'd wager he did on the page before... :) A spectacular, high detail, high impact(!) example of Logan, Finch, and Miki all at their finest! Congrats, K! This is POWER!
