DescriptionWould love to track these down.I'll speculate a little: as the Broderick pieces all were published in consecutive issues of the comic, I'd think it at least possible the OA all lives on the same piece of paper. More speculation: I have NO idea who actually drew the corner art for ROM. Al Milgrom doesn't recall drawing it, and that certainly doesn't look like his style anyway. Or do people think Sal Buscema did the art? I'm going to guess that Frank Miller was the artist there. (He did the cover art for the published issue #1). Feel free to weigh in in comments if anyone has illuminating info. EDIT TO ADD: Gentle prodding has made me change my speculation. I now think it likely that JOHN ROMITA JR. did the Corner Box Art for ROM. Compare to this unpublished art by him and Marie Severin and the similarities in early armor design become pretty profound. Well done, Gary! Social/Sharing |

Andrew - Guice clearly drew the art for the corner box to the upper right. Did Broderick do the rest? Was Devil done by Miller? Hadn't given much thought to these but it would be cool to track them down. The Microtron I have on the cover of 36 is a stat. I think he was used on an earlier cover???

In my comments above, I speculate that Miller MAY have done the corner art for ROM, Spaceknight, lower R. ::coughclickbaitcough:: The five corner boxes on the L are all Pat Broderick for sure. They were all used more-or-less in sequence starting issue 30 through 37. Microtron and Marionette were each used twice over that time. Corner art as they appear on Cover Art are always stats, as the art was expected to be re-used over and over. The actual OA for the 'corner boxes' are pretty rare, I have only one in my collection.

Andrew, I've thrilled to your adventures here for years, and this post finally prompted me to sign up & share my stuff, because I have some info that might help in your quest. ROM's corner box is one of the mysteries I've come upon in researching my favorite character; I have noticed people suppose that Sal Buscema drew it, but there's no definitive proof that I know of.

What may give additional clues is fanzine news reportage, from just before the Spaceknight's series began: "Keith Giffen and Dave Cockrum are working on character designs" [The Comics Journal #46 (May1979); also reported by Meet The Dealers #11 (Jun1979)] and "John Romita, Jr. (is) doing the preliminary sketches" [The Comic Reader #168 (May1979)]. The following month's issue of The Comic Reader printed two pieces of ROM art done by JRJR and Marie Severin, which may or may not represent the scope of their contribution.

But I've often wondered: what did Giffen & Cockrum do, and will we ever see it? Followed closely by: maybe they did the corner box, or the house ad? Y'know, the well-known flying-straight-at-us one that appeared on 2 Bullpen Bulletins, a handful of other series' letters pages, and a half-page ad in every (Jul1982) Marvel except the Direct-only titles. One of these days I might get around to solving the case myself, but in the meantime I wanted to give you those extra names in case it would give you the new direction(s) to do it for us. Best of luck, ---A ROM Curator, Gary Martin, Jr.
