DescriptionLet’s continue with more non-published X pieces with my favorite X-lady, Ororo Munroe aka Storm. My first piece featuring her mohawk look, and my first piece by Shawn Crystal! His color work mixed with his stylization is some of the best…just check this out. He started with inks/wash to do all the lines before going to acrylic, starting with a blue and purple base before getting in there to add all the lush colors over the top. You gotta love that contrast of her darker skin and jacket, and the background, vs the brightness of her hair and the lightning. Cool how those letter 2 kind of blend together along with her eyes. It’s a smaller piece, too, at only 6x8, but doesn’t take anything away. On the contrary, it’s impressive how he got all that work into a smaller space. Won this piece via auction and it actually arrived in a frame which I just left it in. My wife likes the piece, too, as she was cool with hanging it up outside of the office room which is designated for comic OA. So far it’s the only piece :) Also looking forward to catching up with Shawn and some of the other Essential Sequential folks at OAX in a few weeks, as well as my fellow collectors! See you then! I haven't been an X-Men reader for decades but they'd be smart to put artists like Crystal on the title. Vibrant color work on this piece. I'm sure it looks great on the wall.

I see Shawn Crystal art drops call
And the beauty of it all
Is when the Storm comes shining through
To make Ororo in the line
Then I think electrify
And it kind of seems sublime with mood
Just so Marvelous
She’s a beauty of design
Just he drew a bust
(Just a mutant punk)
Just so Marvelous
Blazing purples in the sky
And the blue in this
Moves in style
We look for Shawn, no time for fear
Painted colors on wash ink
Acrylics make her powers glow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not office room but hallway
We gotta show of Shawn Crystal

Every line, man, ha!

LOL! You got everything in this take. Mayhaps after reading this my wife will be more apt to see more in the hallway?! Hmmm...we shall see.
Thanks, Marcus, and all, for the comments!

Before clicking on, I thought you had picked up a Stelfreeze Storm! It's very evocative, I especially love the electric blue mohawk!

Liked this one as soon as I saw it! Shawn Crystal is known for bright electric colors and this a quintessential example of it. I'm not sure there is a more beautiful shade of blue. Big lightning strike with this one 🙌

Thanks, T! I thought you'd dig it, being a fellow owner of Crystal art and seeing them colors in person. That Miles Morales RTJ Spidey you got...a BANGER. Whew!

Wow - now THAT is some intensity right there! Beautifully rich backgrounds that look layered and textured - literal piles of color stacked up on top of each other - that add depth and a nice three-dimensional feel. (It makes me think of the wind and energy patterns that Storm must see swirling around her at all times - great effect!) But, whoa! That electric blue is -insane- and I love the way the energy is coursing out of her, -through- her skull and into her hair, incandescing it along the way, so brightly that her skin reflects it. Incredible effect!!
Perhaps the most remarkable is the fact that this is your -first- piece featuring Mohawk Storm...? Can that really be true?!? :) A real barnburner to get things started on that (Storm) front, pal! Great piece - fantastic execution! Congrats on picking up such a strong offering from Shawn, K! Wow!

Yeah, man, you absolutely get that sense that the energy is going through her...oh so cool. And wait! My bad! It is NOT my first mohawk Storm actually. I guess I was thinking specifically about the original introduced '80s look, with the leather jacket. I do have a mohawk Storm X-Men page by Clay Mann...lovely, but as it's from a newer book I guess it didn't automatically register. Yeesh. I guess you were right to be surprised...as you were right! Lol. Thanks for the add, Jason!

Wow, what a beautiful profile, the electric blue highlights added perfectly to this commission. Its edgy and grace wrapped up together to form some of the best elements that make up Storm.

You said it, killer color work mixed with his stylization! It looks like a neon sign. My first thought was this would be hanging on some richie rich's wall in the show Miami Vice.

Ha ha, I did NOT think about that but I see what you're saying! Miami Vice :) Neon sign, too...mayhaps a project for me at some point?! You've piqued my interest! Thanks for the add!
