Description

Syd Mead is one of the giants when it comes to production design. Known for his work on such films as TRON, Star Trek the Motion Picture, Aliens and Blade Runner, Mead's iconic designs defined a generation of science fiction and continue to influence design today.

This concept illustration was completed by Mead for the film TRON (1982). It features Tron himself reclining in Yori's apartment, gazing at the CPU in the background. Accomplished in ink and marker on paper. Signed in lower right by Syd Mead.

The scene was eventually cut from the film for a variety of reasons, one of which was the curved nature of the environment. The film's creators had great difficulty creating computer animated curves at the time. When discussing the design of the scene, Mead said:

"TRON was supposed to rest at YORI’S apartment before they started their attempt at going to the CPU (seen in the distance.) I wanted to give the space a soft, curving series of interlocking shapes and ‘ornamental’ sprays that would pass for foliage. Since bezier codes did not exist at that time, the scene was cut. The overall look was to be feminine, relaxing and soft."
