DescriptionPosting this one in honor of the 106th birthday of Jack "King" Kirby (1917-1994)!Thor faces off against Baron Zemo's Masters of Evil in their first team appearance! The God of Thunder looks to aid the other Avengers and leaves Radioactive Man and the Melter, only to be confronted by the Black Knight. And, yes, that's Iron Man driving the truck in panel #4 (with Captain America and Giant-Man in tow off-screen)! I just love Kirby's dynamic composition and Stone's powerful inks on this page. I let go of too many of my Kirby pieces during the phase where I was re-focusing my collection (2015-20), and I especially regretted letting go of a great Kirby/Stone Journey Into Mystery page right at the tail end of my curation efforts in 2020. When I saw this Avengers page, I knew instantly that it would make the perfect replacement for that one. While there have been a lot of good Kirby JIM/Thor pages that have hit the auction block in recent years, this one just hit different right away, and I was thrilled to bring this one home. I like that Iron Man says, "Lance is a powerful weapon!!" A pillar in the house of ideas and one that stays rooted in the lore of Kirby!

Wow, this is stupendous! Among other things, Jack was master of 'poses'. Love the Black Kight's in the last panel.

Beautiful. Love how Chic Stone inks those thicker outlines on the characters. Beautiful brush strokes. Each panel has a great and varied angles/posing of Thor. Just an incredible example.

What a masterful sequence. Each and every panel is a standalone gem, but as a sequence, it's an absolutely stunning page.

The early issues of the Avengers have some great content and Kirby art, but the inking on that early run was spotty--different inkers and different styles every few issues. But #5 and #6 stand out like jewels during that time--gorgeous inks by Chic Stone, bringing Kirby's exposive style to life like readers hadn't really seen up until that point. This page is such an excellent example--Thor looking godlike in full action mode against several villains. So awesome! And beautiful to behold. Congrats!

Many congratulations, Gene! This is an absolutely fabulous Kirby page with very nice Chic Stone inks. Jack left us too soon and it's difficult to believe that three decades have flown by since his passing.

Jawdroppingly cool Avengers page from 1964. It's amazing that pages like this still exist out there to show us all how the masters of comic art became the masters of comic art. This is a gorgeous page beautifully penciled and inked by Jack Kirby and Chic Stone. Every panel has something amazing to recommend it--from that awesome first panel with the handsome image of Thor to the surprising third panel with Mjolnir flying straight at the reader! Wonderful pick-up, congrats!
