Description

Canadian cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks is one of the most successful professionals in the comics industry at the moment, though many don't realize this because she's not doing work for Marvel, DC or Image Comics. Instead, she focuses on graphic novels at smaller publishers that garner her a lot more attention outside of the regular comic-shop audience.

The Adventures of Superhero Girl is a strip she started with alt-newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia, back in 2010. She also published it online, then in a self-published collection and finally in a collected edition through Dark Horse Comics. I picked up three of her strips at the East Coast Comic Expo in Moncton in 2015 (before she moved out west to Vancouver), and I'm thrilled I was able to add some of her art to my collection.

As one can see here, she really likes to rough out her storytelling in blue pencil. I love her style, which reminds me a little of that of Bryan Lee (Scott Pilgrim) O'Malley. Her roots in humor strips run strong and deep, as one can see here. Even without the dialogue, this strip about a super-hero's bad hair day is quite amusing.
