DescriptionThis piece of art is so special to me, I almost can't put it in to words. Mike Turner was like a brother to me. I couldn't have loved him any more if he were my own flesh and blood. We had plans to collaborate on some more projects but, as he got sicker and sicker, I knew it was unlikely to happen. To not have a piece of art by him in my collection has always bothered me. Fast forward. This weekend at Heroes Con I was hanging out with Frank Mastromauro, Mike's best friend and Aspen Comics CEO. We were reminiscing and, as we were talking, I was casually leafing through some folders filled with Mike's work. Frank knew I didn't have anything by Mike. Suddenly he tells me that I should pick a piece and take it home. I was just dumbfounded. I chose this piece and plan to frame it and hang it in my daughters room (her middle name is Turner, after Mike). Its an incredible feeling to have a little, tangible piece of Mike that I can look at every day....not that I need it to think of Mike....every day. Miss you, buddy.Thank you, Frankie, from the bottom of my heart. Social/Sharing |

A wonderful way to remember Turner as an artist, a person, and a friend. A stunning piece that is only a small part of his amazing legacy.

I didn't know Michael Turner personally but I love his art! He was born almost exactly one year after me and I couldn't believe it when he died in 2008. Since I'm from Germany and I made something like a "comics-sabbatical" from about 2000 to 2008 I didn't know about his fight against cancer. So the bad news caught me totally by surprise. Still remember reading this awful news back then thinking "no way, he's younger than me, this must be a hoax". But unfortunately, it wasn't. It's great that one of his awesome pieces is in the hands of someone who really appreciates having it! Thanks for sharing (art and the story behind)! And sorry that this comment got a little longer than I intended... ...I think I'll go find my box with the 90s Witchblade and Fathom comics and have a little look at Turner art now...

Wow Tim!!! I acquired a few years ago the Civil War variant cover (Spiderman one/Cap shield) directly from Michael and Frank. You know the story, had to move this one to buy other arts & am since regretting it! Anyway still have 2 superb one of the kind prints both personally signed by Michael to thank me at the time, he was a gentleman, a great artist and a passionate man! We all miss him for sure! Thanks for sharing this Subby with us!

Wow how strange is it that we wee JUST talking about Mike and you not having any art from him! So wonderful of Frank to do this and so wonderful that you finally have something. And yet another reason I am bummed not to have been at the show, would have loved to have flipped through that folder to see that Soulfire cover! xxx

Some pieces of art just seem to belong in certain collections and, after hearing your story, this one surely fits that to a "T." I met Frank for the first time this weekend (really great guy) and as I flipped through his portfolios with Mike's work, the Aquaman piece really stood out to me as well. Thanks for sharing this awesome art and even more for the heartfelt description. I love hearing stories like this!

I love stories like this. Makes the art more than just a beautiful creation, but a wonderful memory and connection to its creator. You are very lucky to have known Mike enough to call him friend. Congrats!

Mike's work had that intangible something that makes for greatness. I was really looking forward to his work with Marvel and a Namor book would have been so Epic. We did not get to see enough work by Turner but what we do have is spectacular. It would have been great to see you two collaborate. Congrats on finally adding a Turner piece to your collection, it's a winner!

Thanks for sharing the heartwarming story, Tim. I never realized it, but it surprises me now that you never had a piece of artwork by Mike, and I'm glad you were finally able to get something of his (Frank's a stand up guy, he is). I'm still sad I never got to meet Mike at a show, and I wish I could have gotten to know him a fraction as well as you did.

Not sure what's more powerful the story or the art? And that's certainly saying something about the art!

You know, I don't think Frank Mastromauro is getting enough props. That was a terrific thing for him to do. Congrats on a wonderful story and page.
