DescriptionTime for another trip upriver with the kooky Colonel Kurtz of Colan/Everett comic art!Cap has fallen into a hole. Genial Gene devotes another page here to the terse melodrama of The Left Above, before allotting two more pages to the already-told origin of Dr. Gorbo, The Monster Ape introduced in the previous issue. The causa sine qua non of my collecting hobby is funky and expressive portraiture, and this page is a fine example. Of course, the jewel in the crown here is panel three, featuring Agent 13, the enchanting Sharon Carter. With this wonderful portrait, Gene and Bill have beautifully portrayed the kind of distress and trepidation that I wish my wife would at least pretend to experience whenever I fall into a hole. Strangely, the next time we see Sharon Carter (in Cap #137), she has been de-aged to a saucer-eyed ingénue. I'll lay this one at the feet of the great Bill Everett, who provided his lush and elegant inks to Captain America #136 and 137. Heed my zeroth-order logic now and believe me later: In Cap #136, Bill renders Sharon Carter like Namora (Sub-mariner's cousin), and in Cap #137, Bill renders Sharon Carter like Namorita (Namora's daughter). See additional images, fellow Everett fans! Social/Sharing |

Straight into the heart of darkness! Forget Ms. Carter, for NEVER has four o'clock shadow looked so silky.

She seems very excited that he's in the hole. Body language... just sayin'. Quit getting all the art!

I quite like your descriptions; 'she has been de-aged to a saucer-eyed ingénue.' Not for use in polite conversation or chat up lines. Thanks for sharing.

That should be on a Hallmark card. If you fell down a hole, dearest, I would be just as concerned as Sharon Carter was for Captain America. Throw up a few hearts, maybe a kitten, and BAM, best seller. This page looks amazing. Colan had a few inkers that took his work to an 11, imo. And that last panel especially tickles my fancy. Score! Big congrats!

Love panel 3 as well - maybe Sharon looks older in 136 because she has 'lost' Cap and in 137 he is back? Your parallel to Namora and Namorita is very thoughtful as always - was a fresh thought for sure!

Phenomenal page! Love Colan's layout. Every panel is so well thought-out! And Everett's inks are drop-dead gorgeous! Great pick-up!

The crazy intensity of Everett inks is like nothing else in Silver or Bronze Age comics. When it's over Colan, you just turned that comic up to 11, son!

Bill Everett always adds lots of significance with his inks. This page is no exception. Well done!
