I have admired illustrator and mangaka, Tomoko Hirabayashi, for a couple of years now, ever since my buddy, Yoshi, introduced me to her work. So this year, at the International Comic Book Festival at Big Sight Tokyo, she was sitting beside American artists, Peter Nguyen and Clay Mann (whom I was helping sell their wares to the Japanese public) and I took my sketchbook over to her and, after asking me if I could wait ten minutes while she did a quick drawing for me, proceeded to work on my drawing for more than an hour! (I also bought a book on witches that she illustrated as an "omiyage" gift for my daughter.)

In my free moments helping Peter and Clay, I would steal glances over toward Tomoko (whom Yoshi calls "Babs") and would just shake my head in wonderment. When I talked to her last year, I found out that she was a fan of Esteban Maroto and Alex Nino, and, although her own style is quite strong, you can see some of their influence upon her artistic flourishes.

At the after-party, I showed it to Ryan Benjamin, who proclaimed, "That's sick!" (i.e. "impressive"). Everyone else who saw it agreed with his assessment.
