DescriptionAs illustration art collectors, we buy art in all the usual places -- at conventions, from ebay, from or through friends, from auction houses, and more. To avoid shipping when purchases or trades are local (and avoiding shipping is a good thing, as an experience we're currently in the midst of with the Post Office is proving), we'll sometimes meet at one or the other's houses, to exchange art for art or art for cash.On several occasions, we've met our friend John C. in dark, deserted restaurant parking lots late at night. He's usually there first, so the typical scenario is that we pull up next to his car, get out, chat for a bit, he pops his trunk, hands us the art, we give him the money and then we drive off. If the local constabulary ever happened to drive by at any of these times, I suspect they'd quickly do a 180 and come cruising into the parking lot with lights flashing, certain they were interrupting a drug deal. "Sorry officer, we don't have THAT kind of addiction!" This past weekend, we were initiated into a new art transfer location -- a toll road oasis on Interstate 90 out by Rockford. We met our friend George H. there at high noon on Saturday, bringing four pieces of art for him, while he brought one piece and a check for us. Though we'd never done an art deal there before, George assured me that the oasis had seen plenty of art action in the past, as its location made it a convenient meeting place for some of the Chicago comic art collectors to do deals with their brethren in Wisconsin. We set up at two tables by the Sbarro and dragged art out of our portfolios, admiring each piece before it went back into a different portfolio. For the sake of the elderly Amish looking couple at the next table over, who kept sneaking covert glances at the art, I was glad that all the art was straight up fantasy and science fiction, and not pin-up! This is the piece that we got from George. We're big fans of artist George Barr, and we're always on the lookout for more of his art. And as a high school teenager back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, I subscribed to Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. I've always wanted an original cover from Asimov's and had never been lucky enough to grab one before. This Barr fit that bill, having been featured on the May 1980 issue, for the story "Wolkenheim Fairday" by Richard S. McEnroe. For those looking to do art deals at Interstate oases, I'll recommend the Belvidere one on Interstate 90. It's well lit, with plenty of table space to spread the art out on. But best of all, when the deal is done, you can grab a DQ Blizzard while your spouse devours an Auntie Anne's cinnamon pretzel. Social/Sharing |
