DescriptionBeen a bit since I posted as I’ve had lots going on but here’s a pickup from last month I’m pretty happy about. I found Leinil Yu’s work on the Wolverine title back in the late ‘90s and I specially enjoyed this arc when Logan was up against his main baddie, Victor Creed, who got an adamantium laced power up. And Wolverine was sans adamantium at the time…my how the tables had turned. And you can see it here in this semi-splash! Sabretooth holding up a defeated Logan before Kitty phases him to momentary safety. They’re mostly shadowed in but that’s part of what I liked about it. A darker, grimmer scene, at least for Logan. This same image was also used, though drawn a second time with Logan in costume, for next issue’s cover. Well, maybe the cover was drawn first. Anyway…used twice! See in additional images. I have another Yu Wolverine page from the run with our titular hero in costume, as well as a Spidey/Cap cover from the early 2010s, so I thought I was done with new Yu pickups…guess I wasn’t, lol. What a good lookin’ nostalgic page can do! Thanks, fellow CAF collector, DC, for letting me be next caretaker. Lasty, see published image. Creed cops a line from a film that was released just a few months earlier that was kinda popular :) Social/Sharing |

This has classic werewolf horror movie vibes and I like it. Makes for a unique Sabretooth Wolvie battle.

T, I didn't even notice that but as you mention it I'm thinking now how could I not! Total werewolf vibes! The poses, the lighting, the background moon, and the colored version even ups the WW factor, too! Love when y'all's adds open up new views on the OA I own. Thanks, man, and all, for the comments!

awesome page, and a nice bonus to be used twice. The Titanic reference pushes it over the top!

Nice battle page, 3/4 quarter splash. Logan seems to be having a bad day.

Now here I go, hope of art breakdowns
I won't take anything, but Gerry’s many inks
I want it to exist, I can't resist
Creed stops before for Alanguilan
Just claws are out fighting
The claws are out fighting
Let's talk about Logan
Please talk about Logan, someone, anyone
Wolverine has a disease
Yu affects me, you infect Creed
I'm affected, art addicted

A great scene indeed! They're in shadow, but still far from being silhouettes, so it's great. I imagine Leinil was very proud of this page after he drew it, for him to have decided to redraw it almost identically to be used for the cover on the next issue. Anyway, great acquisition, Kahlil!

I was certainly more into (early, Portacio influenced) Yu at the time than nowadays but I do remember that page/cover. Striking!

The intense shadows really make this unique and the colored published version is just as impressive, putting perspective on the shadows in the moonlight. A masterpiece !!

Good point, ND. It's rare when the published colors can sit side-by-side/toe-to-toe with the B&W OA, but I'd agree this is one of those occasions. Thanks for the add!

It is a great image of the pair, and I really do love the blacks on that page--it makes it more striking.

So cool that you own the splash that the following issue's cover was based on! And what an image! So stunning, especially with all that shadow play. And yeah, an adamantium laced Sabretooth vs an adamantium free Wolverine. I'm sure it won't be "super easy, barely an inconvenience" for him to get out of THIS predicament. (Couldn't help referencing the iconic 'pitch meeting' catchphrase there lol). Great pick-up!

Lol, I hadn't seen that pitch meeting but just watched it...aptly included, my friend :) Glad you like the piece, and thanks for the add!

Glad to introduce you to pitch meetings 😊. Actually there are over 200 of them by Ryan George on YouTube, and they are ALL hilarious! 😂 They're addictive too. Have fun!

Wow! What a killer Wolverine page! Gorgeous art by Leinil Yu and Gary Alanguilan! I love pages like this that have huge semi-splash scenes--This image of Sabretooth holding up Logan and preparing to gut him with his claws is just classic! Love, too, that the page ends with Kitty Pryde phasing through Sabretooth to phase Wolvie out of harm's way! I didn't see that coming. (And neither did Sabretooth). Leinil Yu's pencils are stunning here, and they're beautifully enhanced by the thick black inks of Gary Alanguilan. Great pick-up, congrats!

Not only does Leinil tell some amazing stories, but his art is just otherworldly in person. Out of every original comic art pages I've seen, Leinil's work just looks so crisp and clean and textured that it's hard to imagine how it could be achieved.

Some NICE comments there regarding Yu's work...and I agree. And no doubt it's "Yu" when you see it. Thanks for the add, Kevin!

Yu seemed to come out of nowhere when he started drawing Wolverine, but he quickly established himself as one of the best Wolvie artists around. I still think of him first as a Wolverine artist thanks to amazing pages like this one.

Panels 1 and 2 are so grounded in a hand-to-hand fight that it's really surprising (to Creed and the reader) to have Kitty's fantastical phasing upset where things are headed in panel 3. Congrats on a great page!

How has no commenter referenced the Leo Titanic quotation on the page? Oh, duh, it's because the page is spectacular. Now I get it.
