DescriptionThose of you who know me are probably aware that I got my start reading comics in 1983 when a friend lent me his copy of Uncanny X-Men #172, which soon prompted me to start collecting comics myself, starting with Uncanny X-Men #176. But, unless you happened to read my Scoop interview from 2006, you probably aren't aware that the first comic I ever read was the decidedly more pedestrian Man-Thing v.2 #6! My parents bought it for me at a rest stop newsstand while we were on a family road trip in 1980.Since I didn't get into comics again until 3 years later, I can't say that reading this issue was a life-changing experience, but, having already acquired the covers to Uncanny X-Men #172 and #176, I thought it would be nice to complete the trifecta of firsts and pick up the cover to the first comic I ever read as well. :) Social/Sharing |

Congrats buddy, has to feel good to pick this one up! You're lucky your parents reached for this one on the rack as opposed to UXM #137 published the very same month! I guess Jean's dress was a bit too risque ;)

Congrats Gene!! Knowing how long you've been wanting to get your hands on this particular Man-Thing, I know it has to feel satisfying for you in the way only a really solid Man-Thing can.

That is really great to see, Gene. I'm guessing not a lot of us in the hobby are anywhere close to having the cover to the first comic we ever read, let alone the first three!

As always, the best covers always go with the best stories. Congrats on bringing this one home.

While I completely understand this logic, I'm pretty sure the first comic that I read was a Little Lotta. I have no desire to own that. Cool cover, Gene. Congrats.

Enjoy your cover trifecta. I, having fond memories of the first series, picked this one up off the stands because I needed a break from all the superhero comics I was collecting at that time and I liked the cover. While the book was no classic, I got the feeling that Bob was having fun drawing it.

I was considering bidding on this awesome cover - but in the end I didn't. Still, like the girl who got away, I have been thinking about this cover many times since then. Seeing the cover in your collection just now makes me happy I didn't try to bid, because I don't think I would have won it - and now I'll sleep much better tonight! ;-)
