DescriptionBob Powell was primarily known for his work during the Golden Age of comics, but his career spanned into the Silver Age, as well.Born in Buffalo, NY, Powell moved to Manhattan in the 1930’s to study art at the Pratt Institute. He found work at Eisner & Iger, where he drew many of the earliest adventures of Sheena, the jungle-queen heroine of Jumbo Comics. When Will Eisner later split off to form his own studio and create ‘The Spirit’, he brought Powell, Nick Cardy, Chuck Cuidera, Lou Fine and others with him. From 1940 until 1943, when Powell entered the U.S. Air Force for his World War II military service, Powell drew one of the ‘The Spirit’ backup features, ‘Mr. Mystic’. And, once Eisner’s original scripts for the character ran out, Powell would assume the overall scripting and writing, as well. Following his discharge from the military, Powell formed his own studio and would draw for numerous comic-book publishers. He would eventually draw a handful of stories for the Marvel characters Daredevil, Giant-Man, the Hulk and the Human Torch in the 1960’s. For Daredevil, he would only touch three issues during Wally Wood’s run on the series – issues 9, 10 and 11. For issues 9 and 10, he provided layouts over which Wood would pencil and ink. For issue 11, he did layouts and pencils with Wood then inking. Which brings us to the piece…in which Mr. Powell was clearly busy. It would have been fun to be a fly on the wall when Powell was given the assignment for this title splash – ‘okay, Bob...we’re going to need a complicated recap of the last issue, a visual featuring of the main villain, a pretty decent amount of word balloon dialogue from three characters…and don’t forget Daredevil. Oh, and one more thing – Stan wants everyone to know that he wrote this issue and not Wally Wood. Got it? Good.’ There’s clearly a reason the title banner got pushed to the left! But, it makes for a ton of fun in this little piece of Silver Age magic. Special thanks to DC for making it happen! Social/Sharing |
