DescriptionFirst, and foremost, special thanks to Mitch Itkowitz. Many years ago, I mentioned my interest to him in this piece and reunitig it with the original art of the same page. Incredibly, I received an email out of nowhere one day that it might be possible to do that. Without his help (and memory!), that would not have happened.Second, it is thrilling to have both of these beauties now side-by-side - sister components of the same creative process that led to one of my all-time favorite pieces of graphic literature, The Dark Knight Returns. Lastly, they may have been separated in the past...but they certainly will not be in the future! Thanks again, Mitch! Social/Sharing |

First let me get my apology out of the way. I know I should be talking about your art post, but I would be remiss if I didn't say something about my dear friend Mitch. I bought my very first piece of art from Mitch exactly 40 years ago this year. All the incredible artwork I purchased from him in those early years became the foundation of what my collection is today. Since then, our collector-dealer relationship has become a personal friendship that's lasted four decades and counting. I can't even imagine what my collecting journey would have been like without him. Thanks Mitch!
As to your post, I'm SO glad you were able to finally reunite these two pieces. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. And it's perfect that Mitch was the one who helped you do it. My favorite part of the reunion though is your vow to never let get separated again. May you enjoy them together for a lifetime my friend.

Eric - to your first point on Mitch, sometimes the way that art comes to us can color (pun intended) how much we enjoy the piece. A tough negotiation or someone taking advantage of our nostalgia to extract an extreme price can make us simultaneously wince a little while we enjoy what we're acquired. Getting this piece was the exact opposite - a gracious note from someone who had not forgotten a conversation with a collector many years ago. How often do you hear that story? When I look at this piece, that act of graciousnss will always be asscociated with it - and that makes the piece that much better to me!

So memorable in the colors! Varley filled in the gaps and made Miller's story so much easier to follow than if it was published in b&w. What Mitch and yourself have joined together, let no man put asunder.

Always great to do business with Mitch! And what a memorable and amazing page this is! Love the colors, the shadows, the storytelling, and the story itself

"....good enough."
More like Great enough! It's always a joy to reunite Varley's painted art with Frank's original art.
Congrats!

How awesome that you werer able to get the painted art to go along with the black and white original. That's an accomplishment I don't think I've heard of before. I've always had a fondness for this particular page of Dark Knight Returns beause it's the one truly hopeful page in the whole saga. I've always loved the DKR story and even more so because unlike many stories, it found just the right ending. With a world that has fallen into chaos, that has seen so much evil, Bruce Wayne's last act is to take the gang that has been battling him and turn them into soldiers to protect society instead of tear it down. In effect, he is creating a whole Order of Dark Knights to protect the innocent and fight for what is right. His last act is to try to save a future he will not be around to see. I think that is an epic ending. So, congrats on an fabulous pick-up.
