DescriptionGiven my growing love of EC, it was going to be hard to pass on the opportunity to put this beautiful Jack Kamen example into the collection. I had seen it go in an earlier ComicConnect auction and figured it would be in someone else’s collection for a while. But, then it popped up in Heritage – count me in.I first learned about Jack Kamen while reading about his son, Dean Kamen. Who is he? He’s the inventor of the Segway and the iBOT Mobility System. Ever seen a wheel chair that can climb stairs? Dean Kamen is the gentleman responsible for that – and the gyroscope technology utilized in iBOT is similar to that of the Segway. I had first learned of the connection in reading about Dean Kamen’s development of the Segway. His father, Jack Kamen, drew the patent renderings for it and also designed the logo for some of his son’s other products. Anyway, that fascinating father-son connection aside, Jack Kamen came to EC by crossing paths with Al Feldstein when they both worked in the Eisner & Iger Studio and became friends. Kamen had been an illustrator for Western and detective pulp magazines before WWII and joined the Studio (and also did some comic book stories for Fiction House) once he returned to the States. Feldstein eventually brought Kamen to EC Comics. Kamen’s initial EC assignments were to illustrate romance comics, but he soon took on assignments drawing crime, horror, humor, suspense and science fiction stories. Like many in the EC stable, he was pretty good at drawing girls. After EC's line of comics was discontinued due to industry censorship in 1954–55, Kamen went back to drawing Sunday supplement illustrations and creating advertising art for a wide variety of commercial clients.
