Description

A Harvey Kurtzman EC war cover has been something I've wanted in my collection for a long time. Much has been written about the intense research Kurtzman put into understanding the objective truth about war as he created these stories - and the artistic freedom he was given by EC publisher Bill Gaines to ultimately tell them. All of which, IMHO, results in this very special piece of art by an even more special creator.

I always thought this was a great cover with the battleship Missouri laying down some massive shelling.

Ugh - I should have mentioned what 'the Big Mo!' was in my description. Thank you for the assist!

Gorgeous cover! Kurtzman's attention to detail (with the help of Jerry DeFuccio) certainly stood out when compared to Feldstein's run on the title. I believe that because of this attention to detail it took Harvey about a month on average to finish an issue while Feldstein averaged an issue a week. This twice up cover must be quite impressive in person! Congrats Chris!

Congratulations, Chris! That you long wanted to acquire a Kurtzman War cover means this is another goal realized and what a thrill it must be! The EC War material has always played second banana to the Horror material, but I've always found the War material to be just as worthy of reading and collecting.

It's great art and it also has historical significance as Kurtzman and war stories in general were not about victorious glory, but reflected the toll on the individual and one's humanity.  Those on the frontline could expect to see the worst as the old men sit far away committing them to these horrors much more frightening than what the Cryptkeeper could come up with.

Truly a magnificent, stand alone, example of art and design that rises above even the high bar set by the rest of the EC output.

Absolute killer. One of Kurtzman's very best and most iconic EC cover images.

I can't believe I haven't commented on this cover Chris. It's an absolutely stunning piece of comic book history! Kurtzman's ability to draw in his unique "cartoony" style, all while being able to portray the most serious of subjects, was an incredibly difficult accomplishment that he mastered. Thanks for sharing!

Kurtzman is one of the masters and his war comics are the best example of the genre. I love this original with the subtle sillouhette of the Missouri in the background.
