DescriptionDetective Comics #463"Death-Web" - September 1976 This cover features Batman vs. everyone's favorite web slinger... "The Amazing..." "The Spectacular..." ... Black Spider!!! That's right... the villain of this story is a blatant and unapologetic rip-off of the other famous web slinging guy. DC and Marvel openly went back and forth ripping off each other's characters all throughout the '70s (i.e. Thanos after Darkseid) so this cover should come as no surprise. The Black Spider is a vigilante on a mission to kill drug lords (reminiscent of The Punisher), but his name, costume, web swinging, and dynamic poses are all unmistakable. Just a few months prior to this comic, DC and Marvel released their very first team-up issue "Superman vs. The Amazing Spiderman" in a Treasury Edition. Although Marvel had nothing to do with this issue of Detective Comics, I can't help but imagine it as a DC/Marvel crossover when looking at the cover. This cover features the very first appearance of the Black Spider. Ironically, this character debuted 8 years prior to Peter Parker's black Spider-Man costume (1984). Any reverse inspiration??? One of the crown jewels of my collection. Prime era nostalgia for me. I read all the mid '70s Batman and Detective Comics as a kid (in the '90s) and Ernie Chan's memorable covers were always some of my favorites. Truly blessed to have this one. Social/Sharing |

Yep! Now I'm thinking he needs his own theme song too! 🎶 Actually... we can just steal the one that Marvel already did. 🎵

This answers the question, "What if Peter Parker was a baddie in the DCU?"

Yes it does. It's a question very few of us have ever asked, but at least now we have the answer.

Always love covers with the vintage trade dress. But 1976 Batman, with that logo and that banner? Just stellar.

Yeah, even the stats on this cover are killer! The title logo is as good as it gets!

Just imagine how popular the Spider-guy would be if he had socko slugfests.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that "The Socko Slugfest of '76" was the inaugural event of what has since become an annual tradition. It will always go down in history as the most important Socko Slugfest of them all.

Thanks Paul! One of my all-time favorite covers! I didn't think I would ever be fortunate enough to have a '70s Batman or Detective cover... especially with the current market. I consider myself very lucky.

Big nostalgia factor for me too! '70s Batman is hard to beat. I also loved the introduction of this character and the two-part story. I hope your web of envy is not a "Death Web" ☠️ 🕸 like the title of this issue.

No, no, no. That logo on the head is definitely Spider-Man black costume and Venom. It is even more accurate than the movie Venom. When Marvel and DC merge, Venom will eat Black Spider and get that logo.

Thanks Vik! A win indeed! The cover logos are like art on their own. They make the whole cover that much more impressive to look at.

I can see this as a MArvel/DC crossover - the Spider is beating down the Batman - works for me! Congrats - thanks for posting and the great description.

I love the beat down Black Spider is giving Batman on this cover, but let's not get confused... Batman still comes out on top.
Much like my favorite DC/Marvel crossover from DC Special Series #27 in 1982... "The Monster and the Madman" (more commonly known as "Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk"), Batman always wins. We all know who got the best of who in that battle. 😉 BATMAN SMASH!!!
