DescriptionWoooooo!! Had to let out a Ric Flair exclamation as I’m posting this!A true beaut from the '80s. For me, this comes pretty close to what I guess we’d consider a grail in this hobby. Yeah, it’s a Spider-Man cover from the ‘80’s (a first for me) and it’s a Saviuk Web cover (also a first!) BUT it’s also personally one of my favorite covers from the time. I’ve only recently been picking up pieces from books I enjoyed in my younger days and this one featuring my favorite character really stands out. One of the reasons I attended my first C2E2 in 2014 was to meet Alex Saviuk. He is Mr. Web of Spidey, and I had a lot those books when I was a kid. Interestingly enough, on the first day, when I walked up to the shuttle taking attendees to the convention center, Alex boarded right in front of me! We sat next to each other and chatted – nice guy to say the least, and more than willing to share stories about specific Web issues and pieces I asked about. I ended up helping him carry his stuff to his table. Pretty cool experience. I got a couple of books signed, got a couple of sketches, and picked up a page, but we also talked during the con about what art he still had that he may be willing to sell. I told him I hoped to pick up a Web cover. We exchanged info and I sent him a list to see if he had any I was interested in, and if so, were any available. We talked a few months later, him telling me he’d look into it. A few months after that he got back to me and we went back and forth for a few weeks before settling on this and another cover (stay tuned, I’ll be posting at some point)! Now…on to the art. One, a really nice central Spidey image – great illustration and a great pose. Two, I like the sense of “closing in”, with the other character heads surrounding the wall crawler – it’s almost as if he’s trapped in the web. Three, LOVE the black background with the web extending out. Alex indeed inked in black the whole background, and part of the web is the art board juxtaposed against the black while other parts are white ink. He told me it was a chore, to say the least! Lastly, great head shots of what you’d consider some B villains, particularly the Lobo Brothers. I love the A list Spidey rogues gallery, but also like seeing the next tier guys because they don’t get as much play. Overall, just a great cover – I think it’ll be getting framed at some point! Sweet nostalgic piece, and it’s great to have purchased directly from Alex, especially since he doesn’t really actively sell his artwork these days. Alex is sort of unsung when compared to some of his Spidey contemporaries of the day, but man, did he do some nice work, and did it with a workmanlike enthusiasm. And, he’s just a really good guy – I definitely plan on staying in touch. Thanks, Alex! Social/Sharing |

Wonderful cover. Everything about him and Web of brings me back to my youth of collecting those issues. Its the best to have a great cover and great personal story of the artist to go with it! Best shuttle ride ever.

Fan-TASTIC cover! Also really enjoyed your story & explanation of how Alex created this masterpiece (white ink as well, very cool). The intricate line work on the different faces, especially the Lobo Brothers, is what especially fascinates me about this cover. Alex is one of the first artists I ever met, and it was an enjoyable experience for me too. It's always such a blast to meet one of your heroes and find out he's a great guy as well. Anyway, congrats, hang this puppy on your wall, and enjoy!!

To be the man, you gotta beat the man...and you are the Man with this excellent cover. It's great that you were able to buy art directly from the artist. That is always very satisfying to me, especially when the artist is putting a healthy price on his or her art. Alex Saviuk is a great story-teller and always pleasant to talk to at comic shows. Congrats on acquiring a great-looking cover!

This checks all the boxes for an iconic Spidey cover, and the story behind the acquisition makes it even better. Congrats!

An incredible cover and a good example of the good work of Saviuk, with all the main characters of the famous saga of gang warfare and werewolves. Congrats my friend.

I'm not always a fan of floating heads type drawings, but this is great. Love the black background and webbing and the composition works. Really nice!!!!

Oh, very true! I remember when Straczynski/Romita Jr started on ASM. J Scott Campbell did the covers. #30 and #32 definitely had some accentuated Spidey buns. And I'd be all over getting one of those pieces of OA if I could. Like here! Thanks for adds, duke!

While talking head pages are a turn off for me - floating head covers are the complete opposite and just at the top of what I love about 80s/90s Spidey art. All the villains and the drama are great. not to mention the black background with webbing make this one extra fun!
