DescriptionIt's pretty safe to say I LOVED this Iron Fist series. I've loved the character going back to the PMIF days of the early 80's anyway, but when my favourite contemporary artist was offered the opportunity to launch a new series, I was over the moon about it, especially as I'm always curious to see how Perkins' realistic shadow heavy illustrative approach will work on a character he hasn't worked on yet. This page comes from the 3rd story arc of the series titled "Sabretooth: Round Two", a reference to this being the 2nd time the two characters meet while solo without their respective partners, Powerman and The Constrictor. In an unexpected twist however, Iron Fist and Sabretooth reluctantly team up so they can help each other with their respective needs, though not after first getting into a barroom brawl! This page features a bloody, savage battle between Sabretooth and one of the coolest characters introduced in years, the Rat of Twelve Plagues, who is a formidable hand to hand combatant, but as his name implies, also carries and can infect his opponents with various forms of the plague whenever he draws blood. As you can see on this page, despite the obvious size disadvantage he has, he acquitted himself quite well going mano a mano with the ferocious Sabretooth. There's a great sense of movement here, especially in the middle and final panels. I'm also very partial to all the extreme closeups, as facial expressions is one of the things Perkins is best at, along with his understanding of shadow and light. Speaking of which, I love the decision to go without his usual shadow heavy approach here, because that choice together with the decision to leave the backgrounds empty is precisely what allows the action on the page to breathe and for the storytelling to be clear, in spite of the fact that it is a 12 panel page. Now that's a vicious fight for sure, reminding us of Sabretooth vs Wildchild or Wolvie.
I agree on the absence of bakgrounds even though he could probably have had one establishing panel in that regard. But maybe the previous page did that?
In any case the layout and the many panels give the impression that the page is bigger than 11x17.

Not every artist is good in inking his own pencils. Mike is! Those fine details in small panels... Man, what drives an artist mad? Congrats for this beauty

Ah, the incredible art of the perpetually underrated Mike Perkins! This is yet another example of why Mike is one of the best artists in comics. I cannot add to what Ruben said about Mike's storytelling decisions and am in awe of how he does such realistic characters, great composition and his attention to detail. And, he's one hell of a nice guy, to boot! Great acquisition, Ruben! Congrats, sir.

I love the talent it takes to draw detailed images in each panel. He doesn't cut any corners.

A proper brawl done right. Putting us right into the action as a participant in some places and pulling back to show Perkins' intelligence to choreograph every frame differently. It keeps the rhythm off balanced and surprising. The savagery and the gritty vibe of the grainy martial arts 70's movies are done with a nice presentation of the inclined panel gutters running upward to signal the greater intensity with each succesive panel.

Is it just me, or is there a Barry Windsor-Smith vibe to this page? When I first quickly glanced at the top row of panels, my brain immediately went to BWS. Regardless, it's a stunning page.

From where I'm standing and looking, it's just you. But that's one of the many wonderful things about art, it speaks to different people in different ways and different pairs of eyes can sometimes see different things even while looking at the same thing!

Wow, what an artistic feat to create a 12-panel page with so much action that is so clear and easy to follow. Smart choice to keep the backgrounds white. I just love the inking --- as you say, not as heavy and shadowy as usual, but still distinctively Perkins. This page really pops!!! (And yeah, guess you wouldn't dare fight a villain who gives you the plague unless you had a natural healing factor. Surprised though that Sabretooth is not at least wearing a mask...)

Leave it to Perkins to make a 12 panel page with splashy images...I'm not sure how he does it with his shadowy and dark sensibilities, but his detail is always so crisp and fine. That's real talent. And that ink wash for Sabretooth's suit! He draws every page like it's crucially important, and I dig that about him. Gravitas out the yin yang. Great page. Rubén. Congrats!

Beautiful! Man... I always think of Mike Perkins as an "illustrator" first, with an incredibly refined eye and an execution that is more "artisan" than most. And although I think that is absolutely the case here as well (for the many great points others have made - the storytelling & "room" on the 12-panel page!), it's really awesome to see him get down and dirty here and just show an all-out vicious throwdown. Brutality never looked so good! Great pick up, Ruben! Congrats!

Man, all out battle page, to say the least. You're on the edge of your seat as move from panel to panel, zooming in, zooming out, etc. The blood spatter throughout adds to the visceral nature of the scene, and I like the choice to have the 2 center figures breaking panel, with the others almost functioning as a frame. Great stuff, Ruben.Congrats!
