DescriptionIn this story arc, someone breaks into Iron Fist's apartment despite its extremely high tech security and his security camera manages to snap a single photo before being disabled. That photo happens to show what appears to be one of the Constrictor's coils in action. At this time, the Constrictor was thought to be dead, so against his better instincts, Danny feels compelled to ask the Constrictor's former partner, Sabretooth, if he knows anything about it. So Danny plans a one man "meet and greet" with Creed. Okay, he tracked him down at a dingy bar, same thing. Naturally, due to the history they have, they get into a brawl before Danny can even show Creed the security photo, which is the exact moments you see depicted here on this page. For any of you who are either Iron Fist fans from back in the 1970's or PMIF days of the 80's, I highly recommend this arc as a very fun read. Heck, even if you're just a Sabretooth fan, I highly recommend it, as Ed Brisson's dialogue is fabulous throughout and there are several funny moments infused within an otherwise seriously written series. I was never one to take notice of dialogue quality in superhero books until Brian Bendis rewrote the Spider-Man mythos in Ultimate Spider-Man, which was fantastic. Brisson's work on this run is the only other time since then that the dialogue has really stood out to me. This page has a couple of such moments, where dripping with sarcasm, Sabretooth brings up gentrification as a knock on Danny's "rich kid" persona and then followed up with Danny insulting Creed by calling him a "second-rate Wolverine wannabe". Of course, Danny puts his hands on Creed as he insults him and that's what starts the brawl to begin with. Sigh... Social/Sharing |

I haven't read that series but all your posts make me want to try it, especially since we all remember their first showdown.

Another Iron Fist gem from the great Perkins! I love the simplicity and contrast of the bottles on the back wall in te 3rd panel. Congrats!

Yeah, but it IS Sabertooth. Even without the dialogue exchange and the touching, Danny could have walked in and simply sneezed and you know it would be a brawl!

It's about time that Danny Rand reclaim Sabretooth from Wolverine as an Iron Fist villain given that Creed first appeared in Fist's title. Usual phenomenal work from Perkins here.

He draws it like Vin Van Gogh
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda deep inks
Then Creed called out for more
Iron Fist was hitting harder
As artworks flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter bought a page
And so it was that later
As Ed Brisson told his tale
That his face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
He said, "There is Mike Perkins,
Sabertooth is plain to see."
But I squandered Dueling Dealer cards
Rand won't let him be
Glass of Jim Beam, Cast aspersions
Bring Constrictor to the coast
And although the bar was open
The fight has just made them go closed
And so it was that later
As Ed Brisson told his tale
That his face, at first Iron Fistly,
Turned a fighter tooth and nail
And so it was that later

Wait! Did I hear you actually praise a Marvel series that has to do with an alternate universe? Since it's Ultimate Spider-Man you brought up as a shining example of something, my heart is all a'flutter. Oh, I love this page too. The close-ups of Sabretooth are pure Perkins magic.

Hah! Yes, though let me make something very clear. While that series was ongoing, it wasn't "another parallel universe right next to the Marvel Universe". It was simply what we used to refer to as an "out of continuity" series where you just enjoy it for what it is on its own and none of it is cannon, just like any of the Marvel Adventures titles. It's only AFTER it ended that Marvel decided to make it part of the greater Marvel Universe (Multiverse) and all the characters mix together so there are 500 different versions of every character running around everywhere, which sucks ass really hard. As I've said in the past, everything that made so many people hate DC's Universe pre-Crisis is now being introduced by Marvel Movies and carrying over into the comics universe and only because it's "Marvel", suddenly everyone LOVES the dilution of what used to make these characters special. Ugh....
But having said that, I'm now finally giving in and am heading to the living room to give "Into the Spider-Verse", which I clearly recall you really disliked but have since changed your tune, a try. The screen is already warning me of "Frenetic movements of animated motion". Sigh....

I gave up reading Marvel comics after all this multiverse nonsense and all the versions of what should be the original hero. How many Spider-mans and Hulk variants do you need? None. I blame greedy rodents buying the company. Reminds me of all those Kryptonians DC spewed out. Super- Animal, mineral or vegetable. Spider- Verse is not the worst thing ever but it is far from the best. Watch something else.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. After watching it last night, here are some thoughts on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse...
The art was alright and I wasn't bothered by the animation like some people were. Miles as a character is okay and I certainly wouldn't be shocked if one day Marvel permanently got rid of Peter and just decided to make Miles the one true Spider-Man, but I also can't say I felt anything special about him. The girl, whoever she is, they got to model for Gwen was very cute. It was neat to see Spider-Ham, but disappointed that they didn't make him look as "real" as the other characters. I don't know why they left him looking a lot more old school animation looking. Overall though, I was very bored by it and had to fast forward through a lot of scenes. When it all comes down to it, there's nothing about the movie that will ever change my mind about the thought that multiple versions of the same character does nothing other than dilute what makes the original character special. Nor did the movie do anything to change my mind about how lame the concept of having characters from parallel universes crossing over with each other is.

Spider- Merchandise, Spider-Merchandise, sell as much as a Rodent can. Hum this line or a variant of same. Any resemblance to the first line and a hummable theme tune to a badly animated cartoon of decades past is coincidental.

I just realised, after thinking about it, that one of my favorite ever comics was all about the concept of crossing over from one parallel to another. It was about zombies though, eating everybody and had great artwork. Lol. Peter, you are a hypocrite! A flesh eating zombie loving hypocrite. Maybe two at a time is my limit.

Sabertooth and Wolvie probably have a side bet on who can get into the most bar fights in their lifetimes!

You have to admit, second rate wolverine want to be a pretty good insult for Sabretooth. Perkins, Sabretooth, and Iron Fist? That's a you have me at hello situation, but if the writing is that good, I'm definitely going to check it out. Great bar fight scene, which is perfect for these two. Nice score. Congrats!

What a dynamic page. Lovely action, depth, and really enjoy the contrast throughout the page to especially include the bar.

Few artists really 'set the scene' like Mike Perkins, right? I love the tight shot of Sabretooth up top, then a quick pull-out to show the bar (with the characters lost in all the atmospheric, inky goodness) and all the lovely detail bestowed onto the shelves of bottles. You really have to get that establishing shot in pretty quickly, in any scene that features Sabretooth, because you know things are going to start breaking shortly. We get about 2/3 of a page of setup here before the inevitable knuckleduster, and Mr. Perkins' execution is rock solid and beautiful. Great piece, Ruben!

Fabulous page! Love how Perkins starts on a Sabretooth close up then pulls back to show the bar, then moves in again for a series of tight close ups of action! It has an almost cinematic feel to it!

Amazing Iron Fist page with intense panels of Sabretooth. You're right about 1970s IF fans should appreciate the depth of characters and storylines that continue into the modern era. Congrats Ruben, your keen eye for quality art strikes again!

Great 2 page sequence, man, and what a way to start up top with the arrival of Creed. Can't help but think about his first appearance :) Some set up here first, then we get to the action! As per usual, really liking that realistic rendering throughout. So textured, so layered. I'll have to read this arc. Who doesn't like a good Sabretooth story?! Congrats!
