DescriptionA couple of weeks ago I found a commission online by an artist I'd not encountered before, and joked on Facebook that I'd be asking him if he'd like to contribute to my All-Stars Squadron project. Guess what?... only 12 days later, here's the latest instalment - All-Star Squadron #97, based on the cover of the Roy Thomas-written Avengers #104, re-imagined by artist Stephen Baskerville --- and (in my immodest and not-so-humble opinion) it's an absolute cracker! Trust me, this won't be the last thing I get Stephen to do for me... In story terms - following the resolution of the "Uncle Sam - Traitor!" storyline (and no, I'm not going to give the details away), the All-Stars hope for a respite. Speedy and the Vigilante (standing in for Green Arrow, down with 24-hour-flu) host a scrap drive in the grounds of Columbia University, attended by the Newsboy Legion and off-duty policeman Jim (Guardian) Harper, while reporter Joan (Miss America) Dale takes notes for a story. Separately, Robotman meets with old colleagues at the University. All of them are interrupted, however, when the presumed-dead Professor Radium (from Batman #8, January 1942) attacks! Driven insane in that earlier story, he survived his drowning at the end of the story and comes to Columbia having heard of their work on splitting the uranium atom and believing that it will provide a new - and deadly - power source for him! The heroes battle Professor Radium, but are overwhelmed. Faced with defeat, Miss America tries to use her transmutational powers on the villain, which staggers him - but he grabs a sample of uranium and escapes. Giving chase, the heroes see him round a corner, only for an enormous flash of light to engulf him, seemingly destroying him. ... and the heroes wonder about the awesome power which might be unleashed from this new research. Very cool take - this rivals what Aidan is doing.

That's very kind of you to say so. Aidan's material - and Bill Cox's Suicide Squad covers - were very influential in making me think that doing something like this might be feasible.
