DescriptionWhen Jack Kirby returned to Marvel after his stint at DC, one of the first projects he developed was The Eternals, an epic saga of mythology and science fiction. The storyline was classic Kirby, this time focused on a race of super-powered beings called the Eternals, who were created by the god-like Celestials to protect the Earth from a grotesque and evil race called the Deviants. The storyline touched on a lot of the themes Kirby explored in his Fourth Kingdom work, as well as on Marvel's Tales of Asgard. This cover, to issue #16, depicts the Eternal named Ikarus being attacked by a monsterous Deviant which attempts to pull him under the earth. The whole cover has that distinctive '60s Kirby vibe--From the monster beneath the earth, to the massively muscled hero, to the Lego-like buildings in the background. Once again Kirby is inked by the fabulous Frank Giacoia. IMHO, it's a Kirby/Giacoia tour de force.Social/Sharing |

Sinnott is indeed a force to be reckoned with. As is Frank Giacoia, who inked this cover. I owned it for years. Got it (and the rest of the book, inked by Royer) from Roz.

I'll admit to never having read this series but if the rest of the dialogue is as 'herculoids' as the speach bubble on the cover- I am all in! Very nice pick up! Congrats.

Great cover. Interesting to see that Marvel editorial ignored Kirby's copy (and the balloon doesn't sound anything like Jack either). From here in 2019, it looks obvious that Jack's copy was altogether more attention-getting.

I really enjoyed the Eternals back in the day, almost a guilty pleasure, it is amazing how our childhood is coming alive on the screen these days. Great cover!

"WHEN GODS WALKED THE EARTH", they must have been talking about Jack.

Just a great cover! This just reminds me... we really had no idea how good we had it when these comics were coming out, month by month. Like a new Beatles or Hendrix recording, we thought it would last forever.

We can save him. I have a plan. We just need some rope, a really long stick and some peanut butter. Hey I said I had a plan. I never said it was a good one.

I absolutely adored the Eternals, especially the bat sh!t crazy Erich von Däniken Ancient Astronauts influences, which I was eating up at the time. Ikaris is one of the coolest Kirby character designs of all time. Love his cable muscled left arm and that giant fist - pure Kirby magic! Long live the King!
