DescriptionHere’s a Bronze Age classic--The Tomb of Dracula #9--penciled by the legendary Gil Kane and inked by the incomparable Tom Palmer. It has all the classic Bronze Age elements that we fans love, from the dramatic staging to the over-the-top word balloons to the incredibly detailed backgrounds. This one, as they say, has it all. First, you’ve got Count Dracula himself, interrupted during his nightly repast by a group of Vampire Hunters armed with a deadly Fire-Cross! Kane really outdid himself here. The Count, clearly enraged by the interruption, holds up his arm to block the God-ray from the cross, which hits him square in the chest, literally causing him to smolder! “There is no escape, Count Dracula, Even you cannot stand before the Fire-Cross!” the Vampire Hunter says. You gotta love the confident way the Vampire Hunter announces the Count’s imminent demise. And check out all the intricate detail—Bronze Age covers really give you your money’s worth in detail. Notice the extensive detailing, from the clothing of the Count and his victim to their anguished expressions. Plus, you’ve got a whole stone cellar, lined with tons of bricks (For those of you into bricks), all painstakingly finished in multiple inking techniques. Tom Palmer’s powerful brushwork really brings Kane’s pencils to life. It’s just a classic Bronze Age cover from two of the masters of the comic medium.Social/Sharing |

Kane could really do it all and produced some exceptional horror covers for Marvel, including this one.
And Palmer brought an homogeneity between the cover and the (Colan) content here. Those vampire hunters really look like they could have been drawn by Gene.

One of the greatest cover artists of all time and a personal favorite. As a kid, the very first artist whose art I could spot without looking at the name. Magnificent piece!

The brilliance of Kane's layout is enhanced by the refinement and rhythm of Palmer's flowing inks. What a wonderful combination!

Pure vintage awesomeness! And just a classic vampire image, let alone featuring the Count himself. Awesome mix of a splash with storytelling, and the pure illustration is of course tops! Congrats!

I need both a fantastic TOD cover by Kane just like this one and a "nightly repast" like Drac's in my life!

Gil Kane, as usual, provides a great composition. But from what I've seen of the title, Tom Palmer's influence on this cover and his inks through the entire series really held the whole thing together.

This has always been one of my favourite covers of the run. As you say, Bill, this one has it all! When it comes to Dracula, setting the scene somewhere either inside or outside in front of a castle is a must in order for it to feel truly complete to me. Having him shot from so up close yet still showing around 75% of his body is fantastic. That he's running from vampire killers with a damsel in distress in tow just serves to heighten the tension and excitement. A brilliant piece. I doff my cap to you, sir.

Isn't that always the way? You're trying to enjoy a nice dinner, and someone always has to ruin it by aiming a fire cross right at your heart. Another absolutely fantastic addition to your collection!! Congrats, Bill!!

A classic that shows how Gil Kane's covers during the 70's were highly dynamic and presented in the most tension filled manner. The fear of the lady is even greater than what is shown on Dracula's face! Very confident Palmer flowing inks throughout. He leaves the lady's right elbow open and Drac's left side of his cloak open as the image is that strong within the entire composition.

When you say this one has it all, it also is a great example of the supernatural element in so many comics in that early 70's era (although obviously you could say that about this run in general). Anyway, there's a reason Kane was a top Marvel cover guy for a while. Congrats on this cover!

There is not much that I can add to the 70 comments already posted for this incredible cover. However, I can add this - this is the type of cover layout and positioning that screamed buy me off the early 1970s comic rack for which Marvel artists were so great at creating. Another great add to your collection!
