DescriptionThey say the perfect Conan cover includes three B's: Barbarian, Beast and Beauty. This piece checks off all three boxes and adds one more: Breathtaking. The cover features a jaw-dropping scene, with Conan battling a winged gargoyle high above the city of Arenjun. Three of the monster's four arms are grappling with Conan while the fourth holds a damsel cringing in terror. The creature has carried the humans far above the city, presumably planning to drop the Cimmerian to his death. It's an exciting cover by Gil Kane, Marvel's go-to cover artist in the 1970s. Kane handled the covers for Conan the Barbarian for a couple years after Barry Smith left, even as John Buscema began penciling the interiors. I was glad to pick it up when I had the chance.Social/Sharing |

For those first hundred issues, there was almost no other book I enjoyed reading more than Conan. Roy's writing, the amazing artwork. Not just by Barry and Big John, but everyone else who may have stepped in for an issue or two. I remember this cover very well, and seeing it now in your great collection only adds to my growing envy.

A Hyborian home run! Perfect dramatic composition by Kane, and Chan's inks layer on that Conan atmosphere we all love... breasts, blades and blood!

In the shadow of Smith and Buscema, Kane doesn't get enough Conan credit. But he did alot of great work on the title. Beautiful piece.
