DescriptionJim Aparo’s run on Adventure Comics featuring the grisly stories of The Spectre began in February of 1974 and concluded in August of 1975. It was short run done on a bi-monthly basis in between the bi-monthly schedule of his steady-paying job on Brave & the Bold. While the run was limited, he packed a ton of horror and general spookiness into every issue. Adventure 431 (‘The Wrath of the Spectre’) kicks it off and highlights some of the extreme concepts and imagery that shocked young readers like me at the time. In this issue he hunts down three thugs and separately causes one to drive off a cliff, melts one and reduces the last one to crumbling bones in the darkness of a plane. Whoa – we’re not in Kansas anymore! As you’ll see, there is a ton of Spectre imagery throughout with a title splash that is cover worthy. In examining the art, it’s apparent that Aparo really put his best efforts into the story – there is a tremendous amount of delicate detail that adds to the overall atmosphere of the tale. I consider this story a piece of comic history and am thrilled to be its current steward. Big thanks to it's former steward, Steve Morger, for entrusting me with it.Social/Sharing |

When you can get a chance to get a work from an artist at the peak of his powers, doing his very best work, you just hope you don't miss the chance.....you didn't miss this chance, you nailed it. This story is an unimprovable example of both Aparo artwork and Spectre artwork.

This is the story that kicked off the closest experience I had to what the original readers of EC Comics' horror line got to experience. In many ways, the superhero trappings, the realistic artwork, the utter lack of humor and the unrelenting zeal Aparo & Co. brought to the eye-for-an-eye vengeance in these stories were even more disturbing.

Super impressive page for many reasons--the composition, the powerful figurework, the incorporation of the story title into the art. I keep focusing on Spectre's ominously large hands! Very cool...

One of the greatest Bronze-Age series, bar none. Was blown away when I first read this story and the subsequent issues of the Adventure Comics run. The Spectre at his very best.

Chris, wow, a Bronze Age masterpiece. Aparo at his zenith. You are truly blessed to own a stellar complete Spectre Story. Aparo during this prime period was unparalleled. His depiction of the Spectre was the definitive version of the character. I hope we get to see the omnipotent Spectre on the big screen with other DC supernatural superheroes soon.

Jaw-dropping splash page for Adventure Comics by Jim Aparo. I love this huge image of the Spectre looming over a jet plane carrying gangsters and their ill-gotten loot. Gorgeous drawing by Aparo and superlative inks as well. The whole page is a classic example of Aparo's tremendous talent. He really put this one out the park. Great pick-up, congrats!

Amazing splash page from Michael Fleisher's classic run. Jim Aparo drew a menacing Spectre and a lot of his best art came from his work on this run in depicting the Spirit of Vengeance using his powers of manipulating reality to punish villains in the most creative and macabre manner!
