Description

2023 Edit to Add - I can call this a cover now, as it's going to be used for one of the covers of 2024's MICRONAUTS OMNIBUS.

This piece was published in MICRONAUTS 23 as an end-of-issue 'bonus pinup,' with Editorial claiming it represented an 'unpublished version of the cover of Micros #1.'

While Golden is on record as disputing that claim, Marvel's version of events does seems pretty likely to my eye. It is executed on the instantly-recognizable Cover-Formatted paper Marvel was using at the time. It is dated '78' (while it was published in the November 1980 issue).

If you discount the topmost Baron Karza image, the resulting composition seems very similar to Cockrum's published cover, and leaves plenty of room for a book's Cover Title Dress. I've even used Photoshop to 'mock up' what it might have looked like.

And, hey! Some kind soul wrote 'Micronauts #1' in pencil in the upper left corner. So, there's that.

The topmost Baron Karza was clearly drawn at a later date than 1978, as that 'bulkier' version of the Baron was in use in the end of that story arc. The inks look to be a touch darker on that figure, as well. Perhaps Golden drew the 2nd Karza at the request of the person to which he initially sold this piece. I, of course, have no difficulty with the multiple Barons.

Golden drew the Micronauts as standing at an angle on white space, a technique he used occasionally in the book.
