DescriptionKILLER MILLER. I'm a huge Frank Miller fan. So I was thrilled when I was offered the cover art to the hardcover edition of Sin City #1--The Hard Goodbye. IMHO Sin City is one of the most memorable comic series ever published. And Marv is one of the most unforgettable characters. This cover captures the essence of both. The art is simple and stark, just like the series. It features a high contrast image of Marv blasting away with his gun set against a solid black background. There are no greys in the image, everything is black and white, just like Marv's view of the world. The most detailed part of the drawing is Marv's face, which is half in the light, and half in shadow. His expression is twisted, gnarled and distressed, much like his soul. His gun is blazing, looking for all the world like a star exploding, taking out everything in its path. The cover is simultaneously historic, classic and iconic. Doesn't get much better than that. Thanks to Glen Brunswick for making it happen. Social/Sharing |

Marv, lit by his muzzle flash, with miles of glorious Frank Miller ink? Killer Miller is apt. This is incredible! It truly doesn't get much better than that. What a score. Congrats larger than Marv's Mitts!

That's a nice gun firing effect miller puts in, probably at the end to give it that extra extra!

I've been known to have an affinity for a shadow heavy approach to comic book illustration, so it's no surprise I'd be a fan of Miller's Sin City work. The purposeful lack of any shades of gray in between the stark blacks and bright whites provides the extremely high contrast effect that just pounds you in face instantly upon looking at it. FANTASTIC!

Interesting to see that Frank initially offset the highlighted side of Marv's face with a shadow, then thought better of it and covered it with white paint. Decades later it's easy to forget how experimental this work was!

A fantastic Sin City score. For me, Sin City represents Frank Miller's greatest creation and this is a perfect example why. Congrats.

Man, this is incredible! I love seeing where Frank used white paint to adjust things. His use of negative space is unparalleled. And the organic nature of the shadows versus the sharp, pointy design of his hair is perfect. Huge congrats!

Wow, Bill - I'm kind of amazed that by the third printing of this cover, they still didn't manage to get rid of all the white out...? KIDDING! WHAT a GLORIOUS piece! I remember seeing Sin City as it was being published (before it was given the moniker of 'The Hard Goodbye'... You know - sort of like 'Star Wars' was 'Star Wars' before being 'A New Hope' - yeah, I'm old :) ) and it just absolutely fried my synapses; all the negative space, harsh lighting, boldness of style and artistic choices... A wonder. This cover is absolutely worthy of fronting a collection of the pages of that seminal story; what a beautiful piece, simultaneously worthy of a place in your brain-melting collection and elevating it even further into the stratosphere. Congrats, man!
