DescriptionTHAT’S PYSCHO, MAN! Of all the villains the Fantastic Four have fought, the Psycho Man was one of the most formidable. Hailing from the Microverse, the Psycho Man used a portable device he invented that allowed him to control people’s emotions. With it, he was able to create havoc in our Universe as well as his own. For a time, he used an android based on the Hate-Monger to transform Sue Storm into the evil Malice and compelled her to attempt to destroy the FF. When he failed and escaped to his home world in the Microverse, the Fantastic Four pursued him, only to discover that there, THEY were the tiny ones, and he was an enormous giant! Fabulous cover by John Byrne and Jerry Ordway to the World’s Greatest Comic Magazine. And it really was the world’s greatest during Byrne’s six-year run on the Fantastic Four (#232–295, July 1981– October 1986). I love the overhead angle Byrne used here, looking down on Psycho Man as he holds a tiny Sue Storm tightly in his grip while Reed Richards and Johnny Storm struggle helplessly to battle the seemingly unbeatable villain. On this dramatic cover Byrne demonstrates his incredible talent for taking the key moment in a script and dramatizing it to draw readers in. Superb inks by Jerry Ordway really make the scene pop. I'm delighted to add this killer cover to my collection.Social/Sharing |

Wow Bill, leave it to you to post one of my VERY favorite FF covers. I loved the whole Psycho Man/Microverse/Sue/Malice storyline, and this cover always sticks out in my mind as one of the most visually arresting images from the entire Byrne FF run. Fantastic get!

I love this cover so much. Maybe this is the reason why it pains me as much to see the price tag jumping every time the piece switches hands 🙃. Big congrats as kuddos are in order here, the composition on this one is just mesmerizing (and Psycho-Man truly makes a killer baddie!).

Byrne is the best. Love Sue on here - but didn't Reed's mom ever tell him it wasn't polite to put his hands in someone else's mouth! Congrats Bill!!

I'm not a big Byrne fan, but this is an exception. Very dramatic cover, and, as you say really killer Ordway inks.

Ordway's inks compliment the Byrne pencils very well and give Psycho Man as much menace as any of the FF's greatest foes. Speaking of greatest, this is definitley one of Byrne's and the FF's.

I think reactions were mixed when Gordon joined the book towards the end of Byrne's run. Personally, I really enjoyed Al's inking and loved what he did with John's pencils. So much so that I followed him even after he left Marvel to work on (the then scorching hot) Justice League with Kevin Maguire. I still remember finding out that Gordon lived in SF (right across the bridge from me) and I went with a buddy to visit him and try to get our hands on some JLA pages. Anyway, loved Al's short stint on FF. Especially any of the She-Hulk issues. This is a fantastic example of his collaboration with Byrne. Congrats buddy! Watching your gallery is like going on safari with a big game hunter in Africa, except for the whole guns and killing thing. Already excited to see what you take down next bwana.

A stunningly beautiful cover from what is to me, the best drawn portion of his entire run. While I'm usually a believer the artists never look better than when they ink themselves, Byrne falls into the category of "exception", as I feel that Austin on X-Men and then Al Gordon and Jerry Ordway on Fantastic Four all combine with Byrne to form a far prettier aesthetic. I still have a vivid memory of picking this issue up off the stands brand new at the comic shop on the day it came out. A real stunner, Bill, and a perfect fit for your collection.

Always dug the Psycho-Man and his tablet. Is it a tablet? In any case, you know what I'm talking about! Few can provide such captivating covers as Mr. Byrne and this is a great examle! The baddie definitely with the upper hand, large and in charge, imposing, enhanced by the downward perspective. Will the FF bounce back?! Let's pick up the book and find out. I mean, this cover's not giving you any choice! Congrats!

This Psycho-Man cover compares favorably to the character's first appearance on the cover of FF Annual #5. I think Ordway is the unsung hero here, though. He really rejuvenated Byrne's pencils with his finishes over him when Byrne was already half-way out the door at Marvel and concluding his FF run.

Man everyone already talked up the cool perspective, now I can only comment on the violently enforced Thigh Gap of Susan Richards and my fondness for the discount Pyscho-Man Toy Biz action figure at KayBee Toys back in the day, where his figure stand would also cycle through the various negative emotions (FEAR! DOUBT! HATE!) he would inflict upon his enemies!

Byrne's Kirby-esque cover design is topnotch, but Ordway's inks are the star here, to my eyes. I got to discuss technique with Jerry Ordway some years back as he signed a Byrne/Ordway microverse page I've had for three+ decades... real nice guy, and an extraordinary draftsman. Congrats on a killer example!

Such a dramatic image of Psycho Man holding off the FF (or three of them). And Byrne does such a great job conveying the sense of scale of the FF against the giant Psycho Man, especially with the downward camera angle. Byrne's FF run was before my time on the series, but I do like the art I've seen from it, and this cover is a great example from that era. Huge congrats!

I'm going to politely disagree with most who are gushing about Ordway inks over Byrne, but this cover is an exception--it's fantatsitc.

Psycho Man! One of my favorite Kirby baddie designs. And this cover? Magnificent. I am fan of Byrne inking himself, but Gordon (much like Austin) really brought some artistic OOMPH to something that was already amazing. What a score! Psycho, man!

Just a great Lee and Kirby... oh, wait! It's a Byrne cover! Putting his feet in the steps of the founding fathers of the Marvel Age was certainly a wise move... and it resulted in some of the most enjoyable stories and art since the Silver Age! Great great pick!

An absolutely stunning Fantstic Four cover featuring John Byrne at his considerable peak. Jerry Ordway was one of Byrne's best inkers and this piece shows why. What an amazing cover to own. Big congratulations!

Ho-leeeeeey moley! I remember back in the day I wasn't too thrilled about the clean lines of Ordway's inking over Byrne (I always liked Byrne with a bit of grit!) but looking at this now, I'm delighted to admit my mistake (or, to sand off the edge there, acknowledge my "growth"...? lol :) ). A wonderful, classic Byrne FF cover, and Ordway adds great balance and weight to the image by leaving the backgrounds light so the players pop out beautifully. Fantastic pick up, Bill! Awesome!

I turned 20 in 1985, and I thought comics were more than 65 cents by that time. Wow. I SO much loved John Byrne's FF run. Ordway was a great inker for him.
