Description

Here's a classic Silver Age DC World's Finest cover. Superman and Batman have traveled into the past to the time of the Salem Witch Trials. Apparently, Batman is about to be burned at the stake for witchcraft but instead of rescuing him, Superman's using his heat vision to start the fire! This cliffhanger of a cover was the type DC created to entice readers to buy the comic to find out what happens next. It was penciled by industry legend Curt Swan and inked by his frequent collaborator, Murphy Anderson. Swan was the definitive artist on the Superman family of titles from the 1950s into the 1980s. He worked with Anderson so often, they were referred to as "Swanderson." The storyline is kind of campy, but it's beautifully executed, IMHO.

Sure it's pure camp, but DC made the fatal error of assuming that the comics reading audience continued to be 8 year olds, well into the late 60's and somewhat even into the 70's, which is the primary reason they become the number two publisher from that point onward, and that's why most of their stories and covers were also campy. But there's there's something whimsical, almost magical about the campiness, and it's most likely the fact that it so easily takes us back to our 8 year old selves and reminds us of how fun and simply our lives were back then. Ultimately, the Swanderson art duo were brilliant and this is a magnificent example of that brilliance.

The art is spectacular on this of course and I love the dialogue. You just dont see "word balloons " on comics anymore ( I LOVE using them on my commissions)

The campy storyline as you so accurately describe it was certainly part of the charm of this period, great Silver Age cover addition, congrats!

One of those great story-telling covers where you wonder "Now wait, what's going on here exactly?  I need to find out!'  Beautifully drawn too.  Major congrats!

Striking and strange cover by this superb art team from a - even for 1960s World's Finest standard - highly weird two-part story. Writer Bob Kannigher obviously had too much of something mind-blowing or too many drinks :) You should definetly get the cover from # 186 too !
