DescriptionBefore Kari's career as political cartoonist in Helsingin Sanomat (1951-1991) he tried various tasks, among them quick portraits (just by pencil) what he made when he was a war artist in 1942-44. Kari liked making those portraits, they were very natural, not comical at all like his daily cartoons. And he made those portraits all over the years. There is one book, "Löysin lännen: matkapakinoita" published in 1960, after his trip in US, where is some of those portraits what he made during the meetings with actors and cartoonists, following ones included: Herbert Block, Walter Pidgeon, Jimmy Hatlo, Vaughn Shoemaker, Henry Fonda & Lauren Bacall. So, Kari also wanted to make quick pencil drawings about Carl Barks when he visited at Visavuori in 1994 when Barks had big tour around Europe, not just in Finland. Visavuori is the museum of Kari's and his grandfather Emil Wickström's life and art. https://www.visavuori.com/en/front And how Barks ended into Visavuori? - I had some part in that... ;-) When I heard in December 1993 that Carl Barks will have tour in Europe, I was starting thinking it would be great to have the meeting between Kari & Carl. I was then in Finland the only person who was in regular correspondence with both artists. Kari was living legend then, the most famous, and the best Finnish political cartoonists. So, the meeting of the both legends was a good plan, and Markku Kivekäs, chief editor of Aku Ankka, also liked a lot about this idea. Besides Sanoma has been publishing both artists long time, since 1951. I proposed this idea for Kari, he agreed, and the rest is history. Attached is few photos and a long article from that meeting. Then into the artwork here. Kari made 3 pencil drawings. The first he donated for Visavuori Museum (it is still there in their wall). The 2nd he gave for Carl. And to my big surprise he gave to me the 3rd one! I didn't expect anything like that! Didn't dare even dreaming that! Aku Ankka editorial did not got any... This artwork is quite extraordinary and very personal, it has given for years warmth to my heart. #KariSuomalainen; #CarlBark; #Visavuori Social/Sharing |
