Garfield and Jon spend a quiet night in front of the television as the little guy ponders whether the lion, having already consumed 42 villagers, is really the underdog of their evening's entertainment. Created using ink and Zipatone over blue pencil on Bristol board, 14"x4". From the Jim Davis collection

I meant to post this on two days ago but as Garfield himself would probably relish in saying, "the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray". All collectors have themes, this piece checked a couple boxes for me. It's a strip/cartoon property from the 80's-90's and it was published the day I was born. I am a lifetime fan of Garfield and his buddies. I got stuffed versions of the cat himself and Odie as a child, read the newspaper strips and watched the cartoons. When I realized that the daily strips were being sold off semi-sequentially, I checked to see if 2/18/83 had been sold previously and to my delight it had not. So I kept my filters on and about 2 years later I got the email that the 2/18 strip was coming up for auction. A little birthday gift to myself and I now feel at peace. Even though it's originally part of a weeklong gag, I love that these strips can stand alone and have their own little dry, smirky, punchline as only the Lasagne-loving feline can deliver.
