Description

Citrusville is under strict curfew and its authorities, along with a number of marauding vigilante groups, are attempting to track down twin menaces: a Mad Viking and our erstwhile protagonist, the Man-Thing. After having fallen into a coma from the exertions of previous Gerber-scripted encounters, the muck monster is an easy target for the vigilantes. The mayor grants permission, somewhat unwisely, for Man-Thing to be dropped into Citrusville’s sewage treatment plant. What could go wrong? Certainly, the “matter” could be dissolved, but the “essence” of the creature would not be so easily destroyed, and Richard Rory’s grief at the news of Man-Thing’s demise would be short lived.

On the reverse, there is a note from Jim Mooney to Steve Gerber, about a change made to the description Gerber gave for the first panel. I have attached a second scan of the note, but as the text isn’t very easy to read I’ve typed it up below. It’s interesting the Mooney felt the need to explain his decision – perhaps it was something he felt he should do out of courtesy (he was, after all, “Gentleman Jim”) especially as this was his first job on Man-Thing, or perhaps out of respect for a writer he admired, having already worked with him on Marvel Spotlight (Son of Satan). Gerber’s scripts certainly seemed to bring the best out of Mooney, and I think his 6 issues of the first volume of Man-Thing were the best books he ever drew. This page is one of many great examples of that body of work. I love the storytelling on the bottom tier, interspersing panels that gradually narrow as the Man-Thing dissolves, into the scenes of Rory’s sad recollections of the creature he had come to regard as a friend. Heart-breaking.

Text: “Steve, I usually try to follow the script as closely as possible – but that layout of the vigilantes lowering M.T. into vat using a cutaway view just wouldn’t jell for me. After fighting it on tracing paper for much too long, I discarded that p.o.v. entirely and came up with the shot from below just after they’d pushed shoved and dropped him into the crud.”

That bottom sequence is haunting!  I agree with Gentleman Jim on the first panel.  Besides his reasoning, I just believe there needs to be a money shot of Man-Thing for any page.

Oh my gosh, that last row of panels is so incredibly sad!  That first panel is heart wrenching as well.  Jim Mooney did a spectacular job of capturing all this emotion.  Thanks for sharing this one!
