DescriptionOn board Captain Fate’s ghost ship, the Serpent’s Crown, drifting out in space, Fate’s undead crew make the mistake of launching into hand-to-hand combat (or rather, cutlass to bog combat) against the Man-Thing. The pirates soon learn their mistake, as they find no purchase for their weapons – but equally, the bog beast can make no headway against foes who have no living flesh and are incapable of feeling fear. Less ‘unstoppable force meets immovable object’, more ‘unburnable zombie pirates meet unsliceable swamp beast’.The face of Captain Fate in panel five shows just what could be achieved when John Buscema layouts are embellished by master of horror, Tom Sutton. Pallid, undead flesh, hair, beard and the decaying fabric of a pirate captain’s hat all merge into a swirling ghostly visage of anger and hate. I really love that issue. Social/Sharing |

Dark and less traditional supernatural tales that indulged in horror set this title apart from the normal super hero fare. Sutton takes the Buscema storytelling and goes wild with details. The opportunity to bring this type of story back to mainstream comics led to invigorated and inspired quality along the entire Marvel lineup.

FWUNT origin page! I guess that's what it sounds like when one jumps inside of a bog creature. Good to know. Sutton's inks/finishes look fantastic over Buscema's layouts. Unmistakably JB's style, but with those great Sutton embellishments. Agreed on that sweet Captain Fate bust panel. Great find. Congrats!

Superb and really eerie page by this great combo of master artists - a "swamp thing" meets "the pirates of the Carribean" :)

This is bloody exceptional - the energy on this page is amazing! Buscema' pencils give so much dynamism to Sutton's terrifyingly textured inks. What a pairing!

Wow! Space Pirates versus the Man-Thing! If ever there has been a crazier idea, I'd like to hear about it! Crazy but it works!

Damn, I'm pretty sure this is the page (comiclink auction?) I really should have gone higher (but if it is you would have probably just spent more) because Sutton really gets into the decayed details for the pirates.
