Description

This page is from the (non-reprint) back-up story in the giant-size issue, �The Return�, which takes place chronologically before the main feature: �The Day of the Defenders�. Strange�s own series had ended, and many of the loose ends of #183 were tied up in Sub-Mariner #22 and Incredible Hulk #126 (all pre-Defenders story arc issues). The last of those issues brought Strange back to Earth, but there was still the loose end of his mask � dropped for the Defenders story at the start of this comic. The back-up story reveals Strange�s renunciation of his powers and addresses his long absence from the Sanctum Sanctorum.

Here, Strange finds that an imposter, wearing his mask (of the last few issues of his cancelled title!), has taken up residence in the Sanctum Sanctorum. The imposter, who is none other than his arch nemesis Baron Mordo, defeats the powerless Strange � but Strange is later visited in his unconsciousness by the Ancient One, and his powers return. He accepts his place as the true master of the mystic arts, and the shedding of the mask seems to be a marker of that acceptance.

I really like the combination of Heck and Giacoia, with strong, bold lines giving character to the faces. This was a fun filler story, and I was so pleased to find a page from it.

very beautiful piece, for me don heck is not yet recognized for its true value, that of one of the greatest
