DescriptionHappy Birthday to Michael Kaluta! This is one of my very, very favorite Kaluta pieces. It is a scene from the Kaluta-illustrated book Swords of Shahrazar depicting Robert E. Howard's treasure hunter Kirby O'Donnell in fantastic surroundings, clutching his revolver (Kaluta told me he was particularly pleased with the way he drew O'Donnell's right hand in this piece!), his other hand resting upon a gemstone-encrusted statue of a mythological figure ("The Crimson God"). It is absolutely stunning in person! The painting was uncharacteristically rendered in oils, with touches of watercolor and ink throughout, and was also published on page 74 of the famous The Studio book and was created during the era of Kaluta's residence with "The Studio" artists (all of whose work I admire greatly). Dazzling piece by Kaluta. Love the mysterious mood this sets. The colors are amazing. The figurework on Kirby O'Donnell is absolutely stunning. Great example of Kaluta's work.

What a draftsman. That right hand is so well done, you can actually feel the tension in it, created by the simultaneous pulling of the trigger and cocking of the hammer. Great stuff!
