DescriptionOkay, I'm personally not a fan of alternate realities, different/multiple earths, etc. But while I certainly prefer to read about Storm, aka Ororo Munroe, as the twenty something year old former X-Men leader, from a purely visual standpoint I have to admit I always liked the visual design of this young, de-aged Storm, though only as she appears here, in one of the "Original X-Men" costumes. Since I can't stand reading about her storyline as a young thief in Cairo or anything having to do with her nonsensical origin attached to all those characters Claremont was introducing at the time that seemed to be aimed at 8 year olds, like Nanny, Orphan Maker & Shadow Krap, I also have no interest in seeing her running around in regular clothing the way she did in Uncanny X-Men #265 & #266. So yes, for me this cover is strictly about the visuals. Although Hamscher's early 90's Image Comics infused inking style was not a suitable match for Grummett's more 80's Byrne/Pérez inspired pencil style, in the interest of giving credit where it is due, I will admit that he did a far better job inking most of his covers than the interiors and this cover is a nice example of that. In fact, this particular cover really gives me very strong lat 80's era vibes. When I look at it, it feels like it might've been a cover published during the Uncanny X-Men run in the #260 to #280 era or thereabouts.I don't know anything about what Marvel Earth-616 means, but for those of you who haven't read the two X-Men Forever series by Claremont, these stories and characters supposedly take place on Earh-161, which mirrors the 616 earth but not without some divergences. Since I can't really explain the origin of the young Storm seen on this cover, I'll let the fine folks at the Marvel Database website do that for me here for those of you who may be curious.... After having been kidnapped by the Nanny cyborg and de-aged to 11 years old, Storm had most of her adult memories essentially removed by Cameron Hodge and a custom transmodification process that allowed her to retain free will. She was then placed into digital storage as an energy form by a mutant known as Pipeline, and later acquired by the anti-mutant group know as the Consortium. She essentially escaped, and was found by Gambit and adopted by the X-Men. They take to calling her " 'Ro". She was kidnapped by a cloned evil adult version of herself going by the name Perfect Storm. The X-Men waged war against the evil clone, meanwhile 'Ro regained her memories with the help of Dr. Strange and acquired her adult body and full power, allowing her to defeat her clone. She developed an affinity for Gambit and rekindled her friendship with Shadowcat, before taking her place as the ruler of Wakanda. Social/Sharing |

Cloud storage would be more fitting, but I'll give them a pass this time since it wasn't invented yet. At least they didn't store her on a Beta cassette or laserdisc! I'm not sure why, but I get a slight Arthur Adams feel from this one mixed with the Grummett. Maybe it's the face? Subject matter plus lots of detail? Anyway, nice cover! It's tough to keep up with all the alternate timelines in Marvel and DC (and I'm with you on not really wanting to in many cases), but they gave us some cool stories, too. For every bunch of whiffs, you'll get a Crisis or cool What If story. Nice Grummett x-cover find. Congrats!

Jason, I'm so glad you mentioned it because I too always got a slight Art Adams vibe from this piece and I also couldn't quite place it and wondered if it had to do with the face! Very interesting! Who knows, maybe other collectors will also get that same vibe and understand & explain why! By the way, I did love Crisis, but primarily BECAUSE it was supposed to end the whole "multiple earths" idea, and now even Marvel is stupidly getting involved with the multiverse concept, both in comics AND in films. Aaaaaaarrrrrgggh!

My brain was flowing from my ears reading all the story points you mentioned...;p
BUT nice cover with great Grummett rubbles. Nice composition with the surroundings framing her somehow (even if I could have done without the hanging cables in front of her).
And I also find that the inks are better than his usual here.

Gorgeous cover! Coincidentally enough, I have been re-reading the issues of Uncanny X-Men this week where Ororo was originally transformed into a child.

A very memorable and cute cover from the X-Men Forever run. I tried to follow your Marvel database explanation of Lil' Ro, but after a couple sentences ... well, it was like that Far Side cartoon, where they portray "What dogs hear" as "blah blah blah Rover blah blah blah blah Rover blah blah." So ... for me it was "blah blah blah Storm blah blah blah Gambit blah blah the X-Men blah blah blah Dr. Strange ...."
I don't know if you remember that Far Side cartoon, but the dog bit was followed by "What cats hear," which was an absolutely empty text bubble. Hahahaha!!! So true.
Um .. where was I? Great cover man!!

Great cover! The cables and conduit really give it a nice 3D vibe.

Great Grummett Storm cover as perusual Ruben! But, I completely agree with the other commenters regarding the ridiculous multiple timelines. Yawn!! I think reading that Marvel database explanation would be a great cure for insomnia! I do love the idea of Lil' Ro however and would love to see a whole book of "Lil" X-Men stories! Congrats on another stellar addition to your collection!

Storm is such a great character with lots of different "takes" that I like, and I totally agree that this young Storm is one. Visually it's so cool to see her this way - I remember it feeling unique and refreshing, and the original X-men costume I think was part of that. Great example here, Ruben. And Cameron Hodge is definitely an underrated bad guy!

I guess I have never really followed X-Men, at least anything post Kirby. But it is a nice cover even without the explanation. Congrats.
