DescriptionFor those of you who've been around as long as I have or at least gone back and read the New X-Men from Giant-Size #1 onward, you may vaguely remember that there was a time when Chris Claremont began hinting at a love triangle for Jean and Scott that included Hank, as he began to develop feelings for her.Well, when Claremont came back to the X-Men on this title, he touched upon this relationship in a small way. I always felt bad for Hank, always secretly pining for Jean while hidden in the shadows, constantly lamenting the unrequited love he felt for her. But on the other hand, I'm glad Claremont never went ahead and got them together back in the Cockrum and Byrne days, as that would've been way too weird. I mean, does anyone really want to see scenes of them smooching or waking up in bed together? Talk about beastiality. It would've been like Jean getting into a relationship with a silverback gorilla! At any rate, I'm happy enough with the "what could've been" factor. I love the layout of the figures on this piece, as it's almost as if Jean is thinking "You really want to be with me, Hank? Then you have to try harder. Come on up, higher, and see if you're REALLY ready to get involved with me and all the baggage I come with!". Social/Sharing |

So Scott, Warren and Hank all had a thing for Jean. I guess that's what happens when you have a 4-to-1 male/female student ratio. The lesson is that Professor X needed a larger, more diverse student population. Then again, old Charlie also had a thing for Jean, which was totally messed up. Poor Jean. At any rate, it's a beautiful cover!

A really well done cover and an even better description of why it speaks to you!

A simple and beautiful cover.
Back when artists were allowed to tell a story with covers or allude to what was happening inside the book (remember those?).
(On the gorilla love, all males X guys eventually had a thing for her at some point, didn't they?).

Pretty much everyone else is saying what I was going to say--Is there anyone in the X-Men who DIDN'T have a crush on Jean?? Don't forget the massive crush Wolverine had on her and yeah, that thing with Charles having a crush on her WAS a little creepy. But, all that aside, a great Grummett cover with excellent composition! And, who doesn't love how Tom draws women?? Congrats on another great acquisition Ruben!

Much like Kong, the love must stay unrequited. Man, that would have been a really weird hook up between Jean and Hank. The morning after would be capital A Awkward. I like Hamscher's inks here. It softens Grummett's lines slightly with his heavier line weight, which looks nice. Another great Grummett cover for the pile. :) Congrats!

Cyclops, Wolvie, Chuck, and now Beast?!?! Something tells me that Jean is using powers to bring all the boys to the yard. She must imprint the image of each guy on the team on her pillow collection.

I think that's 'It' by Stephen King...

Good stuff Ruben!

Jean and Scott have been in so many love triangles, it would take an academic of Hank's caliber to chronicle them all. Beautiful cover by Tom and Cory.

As the others have said, the Beast cannot accept that he is worthy of floating up into light with Jean, becasue of his name-inspiring beastly appearance. Also, he's late for his Hero Names Anonymous meeting with the Thing and Eye Boy.

And Hank with that expression's like "you're right...lotsa baggage...hold on...lemme think about it!" :) I do like both character expressions and the overall sense of movement. An emotive piece for sure. Congrats, Ruben!

Yeah there is a bit of beastiality, but a great cover nonetheless. Congrats.

Reading your comments I almost want to start reading X-Men again..then remember how convoluted this soap opera really is and snap myself out of it. The art itself is just more evidence of great drawing and inking. Truly solid work with a ton of eye appeal. Thanks for sharing!

I remember really liking this cover when I read this title, and here is the OA in all its glory! I also remember enjoying how Claremont explored that love triangle. I mean, we know Jean likes hairy guys from her attraction to Wolvy, so this might be the next step. 'Talk about beastiality,' hahaha! But I agree with you about how Jean is challenging Beast here in this image. Beast is thinking "Um, I think the world of you, but you're kinda freakin' me out right now! Maybe we should just be good friends."

BEAUTIFUL cover, Ruben - so striking in its elegant composition and flawless execution; the drama and sense of peril or potential loss here is unmistakable and substantial. Absolutely gorgeous. I've read some good chunks of some X-Men runs (but by no means consider myself an expert), and always loved the sense of camaraderie Jean and Hank had - I found that much cooler than (sigh) yet another X-person pining for Jean (although as everyone else has said, the romantic options were severely limited, and it's not at all a stretch to think that a private schoolhouse full of young men would harbor feelings towards their only female counterpart...). Having said that, Bendis played with the Jean / Beast relationship a bit in his 'All-New X-Men' run (with more of the "requiting" coming towards the end of it) and I quite enjoyed reading it; it was nice twist to see a non-Alpha male win out for once. :) Another awesome Grummett score here, sir! Congrats!
