DescriptionToday I'm posting the title splash from New Titans #93, from the "Titans Sell Out" sub-plot that was ongoing at the time, in which contrary to our reality, the Titans were hotter than ever in their fictional world and were making guest appearances on talk shows and having all sorts of merchandise licensed out. Although some of the stories during this time were disappointing to long time fans, I have to give credit to Marv Wolfman's scripting ability because he infused some of these issues with absolutely hilarious dialogue and that plus the art kept me going with the title for as long a I did.In this splash page, the New Titans and Team Titans have arrived back in New York after a team vacation to Hawaii, probably to have some sweet fun in the sun with Jordan Joanou and David Askani'Son. Aside from loving the Al Vey rendering of Grummett's pencils here, what's not to love about the beauteous Starfire in a bikini? Or a beefcake Nightwing in shorts? My buddy and fellow collector Jeff Singh LOVES Nightwing, so this post is is as much for him as it is for me! But equally as enjoyable to me is the great dialogue which played up some of the hilarious interpersonal relationship issues that some of the characters were dealing with at the time. Even though she was slowly becoming more attached to him as a mother figure, you still had Pantha constantly getting angry at Baby Wildebeest even though he loved her so much and kept showing it. Then of course, there was the awesome love triangle that was started during the "Total Chaos" saga, between Nightwing, Starfire and Mirage. For those of you who haven't seen some of my previously posted pages from issue #90, Mirage, who has the power to appear to others to look like anyone she wants to look like, kidnapped Starfire and hid her away for the sole purpose of getting into Nightwing's pants and she succeeded. Then Pantha, who is a big shit disturber, revealed in a very humorous way (again, in #90 pages) that Dickie boy had done the nasty with Mirage, even though at the time he thought it was Starfire. Ever since then, Mirage keeps coming on to Nightwing even in front of Starfire, so both ladies are constantly taking verbal jabs at each other to great comedic effect. Fun stuff! NOTE: I've added a scan of the page with overlay containing the line art for Killowat, just to show what a pain in the ass it was to have to include that character in any story. They always had to outline his figure on the main board in red ink and then draw the rest of him on overlays in order to achieve the color hold special effect that he displayed in the comics. Another great one (panel) with the whole gang. Starfire steals the show obviously.

Awesome splash with all the Titans and, yes, Kory does steal the show, as usual. Love the banter and bickering back and forth. Makes the book that much more relatable. Congrats, Ruben!

You are certainly on a roll with your Titans splash pages! Nightwing caught between a rock and a hard body ;)

Not to worry. Starfire in a bikini. That's all you need to know.

is this the end of a commenting streak? actually this comment is bang on for me too and probably true for most of the art out there. ha ha. Having said all that - Ruben - you single handedly make Tom Grummet art sexy (with or without Starfire)! All the great art you have amassed is helping to transfer your personal love and apprecatiation for his work to everyone else that takes the time to check out your fun gallery.

No. It's an inside joke because I was describing the hell of Grummett New Titans pages on ebay that Ruben once bought.

Exactly! All those pages the seller refused to sell to me in one fell swoop & insisted on only posting once per $#@% month, even though I told him I was going to win them all anyway and would give him a fair retail price for them. I wonder whatever happened to that guy anyway. AsiaCo, or newasiaco. Haven't been notified about any Grummetts from him in years. I heard stories about him starting a new company, I think it was called commentoncafco, but those are just rumors I haven't been able to verify...

Let's be perfectly frank. Many people leave comments simply because they're my pals, as I do with them and many of us do for each other. It's a fun way to stay in constant touch with each other and often also have a few good laughs with inside jokes and even outside jokes.
But having said that, I have always done whatever I could to try and further the appreciation of comic book illustration in general and for the career-long underappreciated work of Grummett in particular. If those efforts have helped even just one person gain an appreciation either for the art form in general or for the work of Tom Grummett in particular, then in my view all the effort has been worth it and I'm happy for that.

This story is great. The tension between the three build and later on Mr. Furley shows up. "Oh it's awful. Big guy, little guy! Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! The nose! The eyes!"

Nobody draws Kory like Pérez but Grummett's version is a real knockout.

That is some great dialogue. Like a big bickering family that needs a vacation from their vacation. Also, I love how in the original art, there is that figure outlined in red. So cool! You can put your likeness there, and suddenly you're a member of the team!

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of Titan's lives. The interpersonal stories could feel like soap operas at times, but that's one of the things that was great about Titans. The interpersonal stories (and humor, as you said) worked. And how do you beat hot Starfire? (Maybe Beefcake Nightwing? I think that's his Chippendales stage name). I'm enjoying this (unsurprising:)) Grummett posting spree you're on, Rubén. Great splash. Congrats!

Even Titans need some respite! Great left panel, and yes, Starfire is definitely a highlight :) And the overall layout is cool with the team on the left and the lettering on right in neighboring but offset vertical panels. Congrats!

Al Vey enhanced everything he touched as so beautifully evidenced here.

Beautiful piece, Ruben - congrats! GREAT write up (and thanks for including the Kilowat overlays for us process junkies!) and the thing that really grabs me about this is the Perezocity (totally a word) of the piece; I can absolutely see him drawing this splash somewhere in his early mid Titans run (if you know what I mean), and Mr. Grummett kills it here. Great character details in a beautiful and fun "assembled" shot. Another terrific add to your Titanic Grummett gallery!
